His outburst must have taken Connor by surprise because he took a step back, staring at Leon, his otherwise blank face flickering with something. Something hard to spot, hard to interpret.
"I —"
"Forget it." Leon interrupted, wrenching the faucet and dunking his head into the chill water. He ran his hands through his hair, watching foggy water sink past the drain. He shouldn't have said anything, shouldn't have added any more information to the androids cache, or whatever the fuck it was called; because he sure as hell wouldn't call it memory. Leon never lost his composure, even in life or death situations, but something about Connor got on his nerves. It was frustrating.
He flinched when Connor rubbed his nape, attempting to clean the inky smears made by a shoddy dye job. He twisted around, speaking through his teeth.
"Don't- I got it." He sighed, turning back around, running a hand through his dripping hair, immediately regretting his reaction. "We've wasted enough time already. We need to get that file." Connor nodded, standing by the door, his hands falling to his sides, eyes trained on the agent in front of him.
He didn't say anything when he finished up and pushed past Connor out of the bathroom, his shoulder bumping against the Androids chest. He didn't say anything as the Android followed him faithfully as he slipped right back out of the store and arrived at the address of the dealer, standing on the front porch.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What the fuck?" Leon said as he opened the door.
"It seems he does have 269 orphans."
Leon grimaced, carefully placing his feet at the rare vacant spots of floor between mounds and mounds of rats sprawled, sat and running around the now cramped home. He flinched, reeling to the heels of his feet as a rat ran up, nuzzling itself against his pant leg.
"Agent Kennedy, do you not like rats?"
"What– Agh." He groaned when another rat joined, jade eyes peering up at him. "What makes you say that?" He continued, eyes half-closed as he stepped skillfully down the brightly colored halls. Paintings and pictures adorned the flowery, striped wallpaper. A short, stocky girl with freckles framed next to an old lady. He winced again, not from the rats but from the close up, HD portrait of an old couple making out with tongue.
"Your unnatural aversion to rats does not stem from allergies. Does it have to do with your past work?" Connor observes, brushing a hand over a rat with silver black fur.
"Let's just get the file and go." Leon said sharply, a shaky hand wrapping around the brass knob of a door flaking with white paint.
"We should get to know each other for better work cohesion. I understand if you feel some resistance to opening up, but if these fears impede our mission progress—"
"It's not a fear."
Connor raised a brow, following Leon into the room, sunlight illuminating the bedroom, equally as eccentric as the rest of the house. He nudged a rat out as he closed the door behind them, scanning the room swiftly before stalking towards the mustard yellow wardrobe.
"It's just," He started, drawing the Androids attention. "Zombie rats." He stared at the wall, clenching his teeth when a rat jumped up on the bed next to him. Connor walked towards him, picking the rat up, away from him. Leon loosened a breath, turning to the Android and muttering his thanks, pulling creaky drawers open.
"Just can't see them as cute and cuddly after they took a chunk out of my coworkers face."
He straightened his arms, holding the rodent up to Leon, who looked from the animal, back to him. The rat pawed gently at Connor, its fur ruffling from the breeze through the open window. The light stark against the contours of Connor's face, the slight dimple in his chin, the crease between his brows softening as he urged Leon on. The brown in his eyes was almost molten, chocolate melting from the sun. He almost forgot to speak."What are you doing? I'm not holding it."
"Exposure therapy is proven to help ease the effects of trauma over time by forcing one to confront their fears in a safe enviro–"
"Again. Not a fear. Just not fond of them."
"I insist you pet her."
"I'm not-"
Connor lifted his eyes up to Leon's, catching the light and holding it. Just a robot, he reminded himself. Imitating human life, and mannerisms. But something in the way of his slight pout, his elevated eyebrows, or soft, placative expression disarmed Leon, warmed him. Doubtful, he shook his head, smiling more to himself.
"Fine. Fine, I'll pet it."
He reached out, fur tickling his palm. Slowly, his hand sank down on the top of the rat's head, stroking cautious until she began to boggle her eyes, pushing her head up against him. Connor passed the rat to Leon, eyes wide as he cradled the animal.
"Hey!" He interjected, carrying it with one hand at the bottom of her stomach, holding her at arm's length. Connor yanked a drawer open, rustling through fabric before pulling out a pale yellow folder. "Weird place for something so important." Leon mumbled. The rat dropped onto the hardwood with a thud, slinking between his boots.
He flipped through the pages, frowning. "Andreas Moore is the scientist receiving chemicals from the dealer."
"Let's take this back to the station." Leon shivered, glancing around the rat-infested room. "This guy should really call an exterminator."
He walked to the door, jiggling the knob and frowning. The evening was quickly fading into night, and the room was feeling smaller by the second.
"For fucks sake." The door was locked... It was getting late... and there was only one bed for the both of them. Leon's throat closes up and he fucking dies. Leon was, in fact, allergic to rats. The end....OR WAS IT?
