You walk briskly toward Erwin's office, the sound of your boots echoing faintly against the stone floor as you were notified to visit him as soon as possible. The air is tense, each passing soldier's expression betraying the unease bubbling under their carefully composed exteriors. Everyone knows what tomorrow brings—the expedition to reclaim Shiganshina.
Your hand hovers briefly over the dark wood of Erwin's door before you knock. It opens almost immediately, Erwin's commanding presence filling the space. He steps aside to let you in, and as you enter, your eyes are drawn to Levi. He's leaned against the far wall, arms crossed over his chest, his ever-present stoicism only slightly betrayed by the furrow in his brow. His gaze meets yours briefly before flicking away, settling on Erwin as he begins to speak.
"Good morning," Erwin starts, his voice calm but carrying the weight of authority. "Tomorrow is critical for humanity's survival. But before we commit, there's one final task that requires your attention."
He gestures toward the large map spread across the desk, marked with detailed notations. "You've been training diligently these past two months, honing your titan abilities under Hange's guidance. Now, I need to see how ready you truly are."
You nod, standing a little taller. "What do you need me to do, Commander?"
Erwin's eyes flick to Levi for a moment before he answers. "A mini-expedition to Shiganshina. You'll scout the route ahead and assess the titan activity from above. Specifically, I want a count of the titans you encounter, an evaluation of your ability to eliminate them using your titan form, and a report on any significant obstacles that could hinder the larger expedition. And finally..." His tone sharpens. "You'll confirm if Bertholdt and Reiner are still in the area. Hange's team reported unusual movement atop Wall Maria, but we need certainty."
The weight of the mission settles over you like a cloak. It's a daunting task, but your confidence in your abilities fuels a sense of readiness. Levi, however, shifts slightly, his arms uncrossing as he steps forward. "You're sending her alone to scout Shiganshina the day before the expedition?" His voice is low, sharp. "With respect, Erwin, that's reckless. If things go wrong—"
"She won't be alone." Erwin's tone is steady, almost cutting Levi off. "You'll accompany her."
Levi's sharp eyes narrow, though he says nothing immediately. His jaw tightens as he glances at you again.
Erwin continues, unfazed. "You're the only one I trust to ensure this mission's success. Together, you are humanity's strongest soldiers. You've worked side by side for years, and now, with her abilities, this mission is within your combined capability."
You take a deep breath, stepping forward to ease the tension. "I can handle this, Levi. We've been preparing for weeks. Besides, we've seen what my titan can do. I know I'm ready."
Levi's gaze flicks back to you, the storm in his gray eyes briefly softening before he sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Tch. Ready or not, this is cutting it too damn close on such short notice."
Erwin doesn't wait for further protest. "You leave immediately. Speed and discretion are critical. Your titan form will allow you to cover the distance swiftly, with Captain Levi maintaining a secure position. Please report back to me with your findings."
Levi moves toward the door, already preparing for departure. You linger for a moment, catching Erwin's eye. His expression softens briefly, almost imperceptibly. "I have faith in both of you," he says, his voice lower now. "Show me I'm right."
As you fall in step beside Levi, the tension radiates off him in waves. He doesn't say anything at first, but as you near the training grounds where your mission will begin, he finally speaks.
