Aria stood at the edge of the Hollow, the rising sun casting its warm glow over the rocky cliffs and surrounding forest. Her golden eyes scanned the expanse below, taking in the bustling camp as wolves moved about their tasks. Two hundred strong, her pack had become a force to be reckoned with—but also a burden on the Hollow.
They had outgrown their sanctuary.
The thought weighed heavily on her. The Hollow had been their safe haven for years, a place of refuge after the rogues and the Voidborn had destroyed everything her family had built. But it wasn't sustainable. The food supplies were stretched thin, and the living quarters were cramped. The pack needed more—a home where they could thrive, not just survive.
Darius joined her, his presence a calming force as he stepped beside her. "You're thinking about the Hollow," he said, his dark eyes reading her as easily as the rising sun.
Aria nodded. "We can't stay here. It's not enough anymore."
"You're right," Darius agreed. "The question is, where do we go?"
Later that morning, Aria called a meeting in the central clearing. The entire pack gathered, their voices hushed with anticipation. Taryn stood beside her, her green eyes scanning the crowd, while Darius remained at her side, his steady presence grounding her.
"We've grown," Aria began, her voice carrying across the gathering. "Two hundred strong—and with that strength comes responsibility. The Hollow can no longer sustain us. We need to decide where we go from here."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd, some wolves nodding in agreement while others exchanged uneasy glances. Kael was the first to speak. "The Hollow has kept us safe, but it was never meant to hold this many wolves. We need more space."
"And resources," Kaelen added, his silver eyes thoughtful. "We can't hunt the surrounding forest into exhaustion. We'll starve."
One older wolf, a former lone wolf who had joined months ago, stepped forward. "Why not find new lands? Somewhere untouched?"
"And leave our legacy behind?" Kieran snapped, his green eyes blazing. "Aria's family's pack lands are still out there. We should take them back."
The mention of her family's lands sent a ripple of emotion through Aria. The image of her parents standing against the rogues flashed in her mind—their sacrifice, their strength. But the memories were clouded by the destruction that followed, and the thought of returning to that place filled her with equal parts hope and dread.
"We don't know what's left of those lands," Aria said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "It could take months to rebuild—if it's even possible."
Darius stepped forward. "The decision is yours, Aria. But wherever we go, the pack will follow."
Her golden eyes met his, and she felt a flicker of gratitude for his unwavering support. "We'll need more information before we decide," she said. "Taryn, organize scouts to survey my family's lands. Kaelen, look into possible alternatives. We'll regroup in a week."
The pack nodded, their howls rising in unison, a show of solidarity despite the uncertainty ahead.
Far from the Hollow, in the depths of the Voidborn leader's fortress, the air was thick with malice. The once-grand halls were littered with shattered stone and splintered wood, remnants of the leader's recent outburst. Shadowy figures moved cautiously, their steps quick as they tried to avoid their master's ire.
The Voidborn leader loomed in the darkness, its hollow eyes burning with frustration. "They think they've won," it hissed, slamming a clawed hand onto the massive stone table at the center of its chamber. "Let them."
A scout knelt before it, its shadowy form trembling. "What are your orders, Lord?"
"Rebuild," the Voidborn replied. "Strengthen our numbers. The Alpha's pack grows arrogant, thinking they are safe. We will let them bask in their illusion—until the moment we tear it from them."
"And the Alpha?" the scout asked.
The Voidborn's claws flexed, dark energy rippling along its limbs. "She is mine. Her power is mine. When the full moon rises again, I will take what is rightfully mine."
The scout hesitated before speaking. "And the traitors? Kaelen and Selene—"
"They will pay," the Voidborn leader snarled. "But not yet. First, the Alpha must fall."
That evening, as the pack settled in for the night, Aria found herself standing at the edge of the clearing, her thoughts racing. The decision before her felt monumental, and the weight of it pressed heavily on her shoulders.
Darius approached, his footsteps quiet but deliberate. "You're thinking too hard," he said, his tone light but knowing.
She smiled faintly. "How could I not? The pack is counting on me."
"They always have," Darius said, stepping closer. "And you've never let them down."
Aria turned to face him, her golden eyes searching his. "Do you think I should go back? To my family's lands?"
"I think you should do what feels right," Darius replied. "But whatever you choose, I'll be with you. The pack will be with you."
His words settled something inside her. Syris stirred in her mind, her voice calm. He is your partner. Trust him.
Taking a deep breath, Aria reached out, her fingers brushing against his. "Thank you, Darius."
He smiled, his dark eyes warm. "Always."
For a moment, they stood in silence, the cool night air brushing against them. Then, as the moonlight bathed the clearing, Aria took a step closer, her golden eyes meeting his. "It's my birthday tomorrow," she said softly.
Darius tilted his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Is it?"
Aria nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "I think... I'd like my first gift early."
Understanding flickered in Darius's gaze, and he hesitated, his respect for her clear. "Are you sure?"
Instead of answering, Aria leaned forward, her hand resting on his chest as she closed the distance between them. Their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss, the weight of unspoken emotions finally released. The world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them under the stars.
When they parted, Darius rested his forehead against hers, his voice a quiet murmur. "Happy early birthday, Aria."
She smiled, her heart lighter than it had been in weeks. "Thank you."
