The sun dipped low over the Hollow as Aria stood in the central clearing, her golden eyes fixed on the horizon. It had been a week since she sent out the scouts, and the wait had been agonizing. Every passing day brought more questions and uncertainty, but today, that wait was over.
Taryn appeared at her side, her green eyes scanning the edges of the forest. "They should be back soon," she said softly.
"They're late," Aria replied, her voice tight. Syris stirred in her mind, her tone cautious. Patience. Their delay may not mean danger.
Darius joined them moments later, his presence grounding. "They'll return," he said firmly. "We have to trust them."
Aria nodded, though the tension in her shoulders didn't ease. "I just need to know what we're dealing with."
As the sun began to set, the sound of howls echoed through the forest. Aria's heart leaped as she turned toward the sound, watching as two groups of scouts emerged from the trees.
Kaelen led the first group, his silver eyes sharp but weary. Behind him were several wolves carrying maps and notes, their expressions grim.
The second group, led by Kieran, looked even worse for wear. Their clothes were torn, and some sported fresh wounds. But they were alive, and that was what mattered.
Aria stepped forward, her voice steady despite the dread building in her chest. "Report."
Kaelen nodded, stepping into the clearing. "We scouted the untouched lands to the east," he began. "The terrain is fertile, and there's plenty of game. But there's one issue—it's close to rogue territory. We had to avoid a few groups while surveying."
Aria's jaw tightened. "Rogues are a problem. But if the land is defensible, it could work."
Kieran stepped forward next, his green eyes grim. "We surveyed your family's pack lands," he said. "The territory is still intact, but it's been overrun by remnants of the rogues and Voidborn that destroyed it. We had to fight our way out more than once."
Murmurs rippled through the gathered wolves, tension building. Taryn stepped closer to Aria, her voice low. "Neither option sounds ideal."
"Neither is," Aria replied, her mind racing. "But we don't have the luxury of perfection."
That evening, the pack gathered to discuss the findings. Wolves sat in circles around the fire, their voices rising in debate as they weighed the pros and cons of each option.
"The untouched lands are safer," one wolf argued. "We don't need to go back to a place that's already been tainted by the Voidborn."
"But it's closer to rogues," another countered. "Aria's family's lands are defensible, and they belong to us. We can reclaim them."
Kael stood, his voice cutting through the noise. "Both options come with risk. The question is, what risk are we willing to take?"
Aria listened carefully, her golden eyes scanning the group as she weighed their words. Her mind drifted to her parents, to the sacrifices they made to protect their pack. Could she honor their legacy by reclaiming their lands? Or would moving forward, away from the ghosts of the past, be the better choice?
Darius leaned in, his voice low. "What do you think?"
Aria took a deep breath. "I think this decision is bigger than me."
As the voices around the fire grew quieter, Aria stood, her presence commanding. The pack fell silent, their eyes on her.
"Both options come with danger," she began, her voice steady. "The untouched lands offer opportunity, but we'd be vulnerable to rogue attacks. My family's pack lands hold history, but we'd have to fight to reclaim them."
She paused, her gaze sweeping across the pack. "This isn't a decision I can make alone. We'll vote. Every wolf here has a say in our future."
The pack murmured in agreement, their respect for Aria clear. Taryn stepped forward, organizing the vote while Kael and Kaelen prepared to tally the results.
As the pack cast their votes, Darius approached Aria. "No matter what they choose, we'll make it work."
Aria nodded, her golden eyes meeting his. "I know."
Far away, the Voidborn leader watched through shadowed eyes as its scouts returned with news. Their reports were sparse, but it was enough—the Alpha's pack was divided, and their next steps were uncertain.
"Good," the Voidborn hissed, its claws flexing as it leaned back against the shattered remains of its throne. "Let them struggle. Let them think they have a choice."
One of its shadowy figures knelt before it. "Shall we act, Lord?"
"Not yet," the Voidborn replied, its voice a venomous whisper. "Let them settle. Let them think they are safe. Then we will strike."
As the votes were tallied, Taryn stepped forward, holding the final count. "It's close," she said, her green eyes meeting Aria's. "But the pack has chosen to reclaim your family's pack lands."
Murmurs rippled through the group, some wolves nodding in approval while others looked uneasy. Aria raised her hand, silencing them.
"Then it's settled," she said firmly. "We'll return to my family's lands. But be prepared—it won't be easy."
The pack howled in unison, their voices rising in solidarity. Despite the challenges ahead, they would face them together.
As the howls echoed into the night, the sound of footsteps broke through the clearing. Wolves turned, their eyes narrowing as two figures stepped out of the trees. One was a towering warrior clad in gleaming armor, his presence imposing and his sword gleaming in the moonlight. The other was an elder, his weathered face shadowed by the hood of his cloak.
The warrior spoke first, his voice deep and resonant. "I come from the Kingdom of Eldara, far to the south. We've heard of your struggle, Alpha Aria. Our king offers his support in reclaiming your family's lands."
The pack murmured in surprise, but the elder stepped forward, his voice cutting through the crowd. "And I," he said, his voice filled with quiet authority, "bring news from the fallen council. Your parents, Alpha, left you a fortune—enough to rebuild your lands and expand them if you so choose."
Aria stared at the elder, her breath catching. "My parents...?"
"They planned for this," the elder said, his eyes kind. "They knew you would rise again."
Darius stepped to her side, his dark eyes scanning the newcomers. "Why help us now?"
The warrior met his gaze evenly. "Because your fight against the Voidborn is not yours alone. It's a threat to us all."
Aria's golden eyes gleamed with determination as she turned to her pack. "Then we have allies. And we will reclaim what's ours."
The pack howled once more, their voices filled with hope and resolve as the path before them became clearer.
