Questions whirled in his head, but Kade had to acknowledge that they weren't wrong to keep some things to themselves. Trust worked both ways.
"Okay." He nodded and made his way to the human camp.
According to the scouts, the humans would move the camp every 3 to 4 days. Today, the camp was located near a set of train tracks that had been abandoned. From the looks of them, a tornado must have destroyed the nearby area and halted production. Now with the city evacuated, the line just trailed off.
It was at the end of these tracks that the tents were pitched.
Once more he had to call out to grab their attention. This time he was expected, but the humans still aimed their guns at him.
"Did you get your confirmation?" Kade asked as he was escorted to the center of the camp.
An unwanted face appeared from the group as he was greeted by a familiar sergeant. Peter.
Oh shit.
"So let us get this straight." Peter waved the other soldier off. "We came here to save our planet, which has been working fine for months. Then the moment you return to Earth, suddenly the portal is destroyed for the second time, and we're supposed to believe that your alien friends are going to help us? Is that right?"
Kade swallowed hard. He hadn't anticipated Peter to be present for this negotiation. Why hadn't he considered this possibility?
"Answer, traitor!" Peter raised a gun to Kade's face. When he didn't answer, he turned to address the others. "I think the only way we can get the resources we need is to negotiate on our terms. Because if we trust this bastard again, we'll end up high and dry like before."
The onlookers began nodding their heads, agreeing with the sergeant's unhinged claims.
"You can't fight them!" Kade tried to argue, only to get a gun shoved back in his face. He bit back the stab of fear that pulsed through him. "They outnumber you. You'll run out of food and ammo eventually. And Terrans we are much stronger than we are."
"Then how about we trade them something they want and we don't need?" Peter grabbed Kade and twisted his wrist behind his back. Then held the nozzle of his gun under his chin.
"Wait!" One of the other soldiers stepped forward. "If we're stranded here, then wouldn't it be wiser to keep him with us? He knows the most about this world and speaks their language!"
"He also sabotaged the project and tried to murder his coworker. We don't need trash like this. If he could find a way to survive, then so can a platoon of highly trained soldiers." Peter rationalized, then forced Kade to walk.
Kade stumbled in the uncomfortable position and tripped a few times. It was an awkward trek back near the gates where he'd emerged. But now there was an army of armored carnivores waiting, swords at the ready.
Peter raised his gun and shot into the sky, showing what he was capable of. Then he pointed it back at Kade's head. "Translate for me."
Kade eyed the soldiers, then looked up at the wall where he knew Nyx was watching. But no matter how hard he searched, he couldn't find Aino.
Peter started talking into his ear, and Kade translated as fast as he could.
"The humans want food and medicine delivered to their camp by tonight. They would like enough to supply a small village. If they do not receive these provisions in time...Kade will be killed and we will keep encroaching on your city. Give us what we want if you don't want any more casualties."
They waited to see if Nyx would respond. Instead, the carnivore bared his fangs menacingly at Peter. Kade had never seen this sort of behavior before.
Then he once more wondered where Aino was? Or King Toca for that matter? The both of them had been at the gate when he left.
