4) Sim Jaeyun, The Jerk and the Bitch

I adjust the collar of my buttoned-up shirt and slip my arms through the sleeves of my lab coat. Then moving my hair away from my eyes, I stare at the reflection in my mirror.

The name "Sim Jaeyun" is sewn onto my left breast pocket, and instead of "HeartBridge Connection" underneath, "Southwestern Korean Medical Center" took its place. I chuckle, smiling sourly.

"Goodness, how did I end up in this situation? I don't even want to take over the hospital." I say out loud.

Walking downstairs, I spot Dad sitting on the couch reading a newspaper. Mom and Kihun already left this morning, and Dad said he would personally take me to the hospital and introduce me to my unit. Once we made eye contact, Dad grinned and placed his newspaper to the side.

"Jaeyun!" he hurries to me, placing his hands on my shoulders. "You look wonderful! How does it feel to have a brand-new lab coat on? Are you excited for your new job?"

"Oh, of course," I say through my teeth, smiling. "Who wouldn't want to miss their first day?"

Dad undoubtedly got the message because he patted me hard on the back with his inhuman strength, almost knocking me off my feet. "You're not going to embarrass me today, are you?"

"Well, it depends."

Dad sighs, turning around and walking to the front door. The family bodyguards appeared from the sides, as they were stationed in random places of the house, and went in front of him, opening the door and a black umbrella to block out the sun. The bodyguards who worked with us for the longest already knew we were vampires, while the ones who came later assumed we had a sensitive skin condition.

"No more time to waste," Dad said, sliding on his sunglasses. "Let's get to the hospital."

🩸🩸🩸

Questionable stares surrounded us since we entered the hospital. Dad usually takes a different entrance, not the front like the rest of us. You see the president in a black suit and lab coat strolling through the halls. And then there's me, in a lab coat and a strong resemblance to the older man ahead. Though the workers bowed and greeted us while we walked by, they whispered under their breaths. Thanks to my heightened vampire senses, I could hear their whispers loud and clear.

"Is that the president?"

"What's the president doing here? Shouldn't he be in his office right now?"

"I'm wondering who's that person walking behind him?"

"Doesn't he look a bit like Dr. Kihun Sim in the pediatric unit?"

"Isn't that President Sim's second son?"

"I thought he was working at a nonprofit? What's he doing here?"

"Ignore them," Dad says to me when we get inside the elevator. "They're questioning you now, but all that will change once they see your skills."

What skills, I wanted to ask. Just because I have an interest in blood doesn't mean I'm exceptional in everything I do. Besides, I rather have Kihun in the spotlight. He's more suited for it in the end.

When we stepped out onto the blood unit floor, the first people I eyed were Y/n, Kihun, and another guy I didn't know. The whole level grew quiet when Dad began speaking.

"No need to be alarmed folks. I just have an important announcement to make," he said, gesturing over to me. "This is my youngest and second child, Sim Jaeyun. He originally handled blood donations at the nonprofit organization HeartBridge Connection. However, due to underlying circumstances, Jaeyun will now work as a hematologist here at the hospital. Please give him a warm welcome."

Hesitant claps soon emerge. Dad nudges to the front and inclines his head. He wants me to say more.

I bow. "My name is Sim Jaeyun, the new hematologist for this unit. I will do my best, so please have me in your care."

The claps came again after finishing my short intro. I stood straight up and glanced over at Y/n. Her lips were pursed together in irritation when we made eye contact, and she quickly turned away and marched back to her work area. The guy I didn't know went after her, and Kihun did the same.

"Now everything's settled," Dad says to me, "I'll leave you with the head doctor."

When he said that, a guy who looked around his late 30s came over. He held a clipboard and nodded to my dad. "It's wonderful to see you, Mr. President," he says before turning to me. "My name is Dr. Park Jongseong, and I'm in charge of this unit. Your father has requested for you to be the attending physician, so you'll work under me."

"Attending physician?" That high of a role? "Was there another person in my spot?"

"No, Dr. Sim. It's been vacant for a while."

"Oh, okay. Is there anywhere to sit my stuff down?"

"Yes. You can put it in my office near the pharmacy. We're still getting everything situated out for your office. Do you need me to show you where mine is at?"

"No, I know where it is, Dr. Park. Thank you, though."

Truth be told, I didn't have anything to put up; I just wanted to be nosy and walk by Y/n's place.

I almost ran into Kihun when I turned the corner. He mumbled an apology, looking down and walking around me. The other guy appeared from nearby.

"Is Kihun—I mean Dr. Sim alright?" I ask, pointing in the direction he left with my thumb. "Yes, he's fine," the guy replies. "He nearly got chewed out by my sister in there. I took him out before Y/n started swinging."

"Wait, Y/n's your sister?"

"Yes. You didn't—oh!"

The guy covered his mouth with his hand, stopping himself from what he was going to say next. "What? Were you talking about me in there or something?"

"No, I just realized you were the guy Y/n called Je—"

"Jungwon!"

Y/n stood in the doorway, glaring at her brother with her hands on her hips. "Aren't you supposed to be getting back to work? You don't even work on this floor."

"Sorry, sis," Jungwon said, raising his hands in defense. He whirled his head at me. "Y/n can be a little cranky sometimes, but she's very nice Jer—I mean Dr. Sim. I'll see you soon!"

Jungwon sped out of the area, leaving me there alone with the fuming woman. The air around us grew colder. "So, I guess we're coworkers now?" I ask slowly, trying to lighten up the mood. "Don't even try it with me, you jerk," Y/n grumbled, going back into the pharmacy and closing the door. I sneer.

"Great to be working with you too, bitch."

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I started a new job, and school will be started again soon. On other news, it snowed in my city yesterday (the area I live in doesn't get snow a lot, it's usually hot)! :D
