"Y/n, are you in here?"
I was in the back organizing a prescription when I heard Jungwon call my name. I came out to see him and Kihun in the doorway. My eyes might be playing tricks on me, but why does Kihun have a look of guilt and nervousness on his face?
"I swear, the two of you have the record for doctors not being on their home floor for the most time," I said. "But what is it?"
"Dr. Park wants to see all of us at the front," answered Jungwon.
"Oh, that's all? But that doesn't explain why the two of you pediatricians should be here."
"We got an excuse from the higher-ups, that's why," Kihun added in a quiet voice. I narrowed my eyes with confusion and suspicion. So my eyes weren't playing tricks; Kihun was anxious about something.
"Eh, alright then." I followed the two guys out of the room into the main area, where all the other doctors and nurses from the unit stood. It must be something important because the head doctor of the unit, Dr. Park, was here as well.
"Y/n?" I heard Kihun behind me. "I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for what will happen next."
"Huh? What do you mean?" I wondered. But then my question was answered.
The elevator doors opened, and out stepped the hospital president, Dr. Sim, with another guy following behind. Low murmurs erupted when the guy came into view.
Oh.
My.
Fucking.
Gosh.
There stood the great Sim Jerkyun, the man I hoped to have only one encounter with. Why the heck is he here, prancing around in some lab coat? I saw him glance over at me, but I quickly turned away.
"No need to be alarmed, folks. I just have an important announcement to make," President Sim said, presenting over to Jerkyun. "This is my youngest and second child, Sim Jaeyun. He originally handled blood donations at the nonprofit organization HeartBridge Connection. However, due to underlying circumstances, Jaeyun will now work as a hematologist here at Southwestern Korea Medical Center. Please give him a warm welcome."
Everyone in the room clapped and cheered for the recruit. I clapped slowly, feeling Kihun's gaze lingering at the back of my head. Then Jerkyun got moved to the front and introduced himself, saying stuff like please have me in your care or something.
When the claps came again, he and I made eye contact. I could feel my blood pressure rising from just being in the same room as him. I pursed my lips and turned away, making my way back to my spot of solitude.
"Y/n, wait up!"
I paused in my tracks when I felt Kihun's hand on my shoulder. "I was going to tell you earlier, but—"
"So, did you think that your brother and I were joking around when we first met?" I asked sharply. "Do you need a repeat of what he said?"
"No, but—"
"I just want to get back to work Kihun. Please leave me alone. Let me cool down."
The pediatrician didn't try to stop me this time as I walked back inside the pharmacy. I was just about to sit back down when I heard Jungwon and that other man from the hall.
"Wait, Y/n's your sister?"
"Yes. You didn't—oh!"
The way my brother was talking, he was going to say something that wasn't supposed to be said out loud. Groaning, I strode to the doorway and shouted Jungwon's name to stop him from saying something stupid.
"Aren't you supposed to be getting back to work? You don't even work on this floor."
"Sorry, sis," Jungwon said in defense, then turned back to Jerkyun. "Y/n can be a little cranky sometimes, but she's very nice, Jer—I mean Dr. Sim. I'll see you soon!"
My brother sped away quickly, leaving me alone with the new guy.
"So," he started. "I guess we're coworkers now?"
"Don't even try it with me, you jerk."
I fiercely whipped my head around and strode back to my spot. I didn't hear what Jerkyun quite said afterward, but the word "bitch" was spoken at the end of the sentence. Second encounters, am I right?
🩸🩸🩸
During the next few days, I did my best to avoid Jerkyun. If I saw him walk one way, I turned around and walked the other. If I saw him in one area, I went to another. If it seemed he was coming towards my lunch table, I picked up my tray and sat at another one. People may say I'm overreacting, but would you want to be in the same place as a person with a stuck-up attitude? Not me. You can blame the grudges I hold for that.
Jerkyun was already popular amongst our unit and gaining traction in the others. His so-called good looks and charms have attracted a small fanbase of nurses, doctors, and patients. They find it so cool that such a handsome new doctor was the hospital president's son and the younger brother of the well-known pediatrician. Thinking about that boils a pit in my stomach.
I had just given a patient their prescription when Dr. Park came in with Jerkyun. I quickly pushed away the scowl that appeared on my face.
"There's our star pharmacist, Yang Y/n," said Dr. Park. "You're just the person I'm looking for."
"What can I do for you, sir?" I asked, keeping my eyes away from the figure behind him.
"I was wondering if you could show Jaeyun around the pharmacy. I want him to get familiar with the medicines here. Since he came from a small clinic, I want him to get a taste of the big boys over here."
When Dr. Park starts his sentences with "I was wondering," that means we don't have a choice but to heed his request.
"Well, yes, that's fine with me," I said calmly with a forced smile. "Jer- Jaeyun, you can follow me."
"Ah, thank you so much, Y/n. Well, I'll let you go, Jaeyun. Come back when you're finished."
I led Jerkyun behind the counter and began introducing him to the medicines we have. We keep everything on shelves and in fridges, from pills to blood packets. I do a good job of keeping this place clean and organized, I say so myself.
When we got to the fridge section where the blood and cold medicines were, I heard an almost gagging sound from behind. I turned around and saw Jerkyun covering his nose and mouth with his sleeve.
"Is the smell making you sick?" I asked, annoyed. "Don't you work with blood for a living? How is this bothering you?"
"The smell just gets to me," he replied. "I just have a sensitive nose."
"Really? It just smells like medicine in here, and I clean a bit every time before I leave. Are you saying I don't keep pharmacy well-groomed?"
"No. You're just putting words in my mouth now."
"For the love of God, could you please—" I picked up a box from a shelf and failed to notice the stack of paper on top. They came tumbling down, right on the side of my thumb. Blood oozed from the inch-long paper cut.
I hissed in pain, covering it up with my other hand. There was a loud sigh coming where Jerkyun was standing, nearly sounding like a sigh of pleasure.
Turning to look at him, my eyes couldn't believe what I saw in front of me.
