"I-I need to know something." Your fingers twitched against his cheek. Your brows furrowed at the slight, sickly warm and wet feeling of his saliva on your skin. But you breathed in and exhaled slowly. "You need to promise me." Each word pained you, every vowel and consonant spoken through gritted teeth. Your heart pounded in your chest, the pumping blood even flooded through your ears you could hear the rushing roar. Though, there was silence in the night air tonight.

How could he be so calm? How could he keep his gaze so steady when you looked anywhere but him? Usually, you found peace in the rolling fields of his brilliant hues. Those eyes looked at you with so much love and adoration. You were the only one he could see. So why was he looking at you so intensely? So... hungrily? But beyond that, there was a concentrated shame lingering in the outer shade of sage.

"Why aren't you fighting?" You squeezed his jaw with all the strength you could muster: his canine sunk into your skin until crimson blood appeared. The end of your yelled words ran along the sidewalk. "You can't just..!" But your voice cracked. You blinked away the forming blur and steeled yourself to face him. Tucking your chin, you met his gaze with the most level one you could. "You can't just give up." The pain finally registered in your mind and you released his jaw once trickling blood almost slithered down to your wrist. His lips trembled, eyes veiling a sad look. Your jaw tensed.

"Stop looking at me like that!" You squeezed your eyes shut and shook your head, as if shuddering off the growing fear. "Like I'm just some— some piece of meat!" Then, you forced yourself to look at him. But the tears were already swelling in your eyes.

"Is that who I am to you?" You dragged in a breath. "Is that what you think of me?" But your voice was growing very quiet.

"I'm not... I-I'm..."

The cement to the side of your face resounded from the force slammed onto it. His skin prickled against the concrete in a sandpaper noise from how tight he clenched it into a fist. You jolted with a fearful gasp at the exhibited strength— one you had never seen before. And as you were too busy trembling from the movement, you failed to notice his other hand leaving your shoulder and grasping your wrist. He ripped your hand away from his jaw in order to pin it next to your face. His chest dragged up and down.

"Y-Y/n..."

You had long squeezed your eyes shut and turned away with a small, fearful noise. You didn't want to face him, not when other benevolent notions appeared in his once kind eyes. Whether it was your fear or regret, tears sprung to your eyes and squeezed down your cheeks. You tried to stop your chest from shuttering; it was fruitless to cry. You had known what would happen the minute you deepened this relationship with him those years ago– before the incident. You had made it your mission to look past that; he wasn't some monster to be afraid of. He had a life: friends, studies, goals– just like any other person. Yet deep down, this small inkling of unease lingered. So, was this your fault? Possibly, it was his and yours both. Unlike the other unlucky insect humans here, there was no switch that could be flipped. But for Suchan, who had tasted the flesh of another, there was. The possibility that another outburst could occur, especially due to the love he had for you, was slim but never zero. With the constant experiments and new formulas, a fatal incident was never a worry. But here you two were, secluded from any other being. For right now, it was not him and you; it was simply predator and prey.

Your breathing hitched into a small sob. What were you crying about? This was only inevitable; it was only natural. But the thought of your lover, lost and scared deep inside, still fostered the tears into streams of guilt. All you wanted was for him to live a peaceful life. With all this weight on his shoulders, he still smiled and cared for you. A laugh and he says he's "fine"... but you knew all was not in that mind of his. In this moment, with your heart beating out of your chest, you could only feel remorse for how you couldn't give him all he deserved. You only hoped in these final moments, that he saw you with love one last time.

A shiver ran up your spine when he adjusted above you, his hand squeezed your wrist further into the cement in twisted torment. Your breathing quickened more and more until it pushed from your chest in tune with your quiet sobs. He had inched dangerously close– more than he had already– until his hot breath fanned against your neck. The sensation tickled you, and for a split moment you anticipated the laugh that would follow– like he usually did when this close with you. Maybe this was all a bad dream. Perhaps you'd wake up in his warm arms with the morning sun filtering over you. He'd kiss your forehead and apologize for nudging you awake. But you'd simply laugh and snuggle into his chest. In those memories, he was warm and comforting. Yet now, he was hot and suffocating. The anticipation nearly killed you– just get it over with. It equally pained you both to remain like this. But there was nothing you could do. With the last of your strength having dissolved into fear, your entire body relaxed. One last time, you wanted to see him one last time.

"M-m-my love... what have I done to you?"

What you thought was saliva dripping onto your shoulder was actually... tears– his tears. The hunger that swirled in fields of green now watered down with rivers of remorse. His lip trembled, his whole face twitched from held back sobs. Though saliva still glistened in the corners of his mouth, he was not focused on your scent. His eyes now longer jittered from in between vision– no, he saw you. Not as prey, not as a fellow insect human– but as you... his dear partner. This realization washed over you first as a wave of relief. There was nothing to be scared of, he had a strong hold on himself. Next, a shiver of joy cascaded down your spine; you had been so dampened by all these final thoughts that it was a delight to know they were for naught. Finally, you couldn't hold back the alleviating cries when you struggled from his grasp and threw your arms around him.

"Suchan!" You sobbed into his shoulder. He smelled like cotton. "Oh Suchan!"

The aforementioned man practically collapsed in your arms, bestowing a weight that comforted you to your very core. Your initial tears turned into ones of relief just having him here, alive, with the rush of warm blood under soft skin. Though his body nearly covered you, it was a small structure to have in your arms. He seemed so tiny and weak a certain warmth flourished throughout your body. You smiled and held him the closest you could until there was no space between two hearts. Together you were one.

"I..." He swallowed and leaned back to face you. "I didn't..."

You cupped his cheek, and offered him a reassuring smile. "You didn't do anything, dear."

Just hearing your voice almost made him pass out. He... he didn't hurt you. What a relief. Usually these rare outbursts ended in someone getting hurt– usually himself. So to have you here, alive and breathing, made his body tremble. He buried his face in your neck once more, this time not silencing the sobs wracking his chest. Your small hands patted over his shoulders and arms, as if not believing he was still in front of you. Likewise, he took a wobbling hand to brush down your hair and cup your head. Then, he lifted his weight just a little in order to truly capture you in his embrace. His wings fell slack against his spine as if breathing a sigh of relief. Gradually, hearts calmed and breathing eased until you two were simply two lovers entangled in the love of the other. He rocked you gently in a way that fluttered your eyes closed. There were no other sounds except the cicadas and small disbelieved murmurs of his name.

The moon sailed high overhead once the rain clouds dispersed; the stars twinkled and glittered in the sky's black stage. Down below, a pair rejoiced in another moment together, one they were sure was their last. But the heart did strange things. In a way, we all had a love that drove us insane; passion did interesting things to a person. Fervor turned into joy, fixation turned into... obsession. No matter how innocent, how strong or dignified, the heart yearned until the dark caverns of one's mind surfaced. And as Suchan Jang held his love close, safe and sound in his arms, there was one thing nature always ensured.

Hunger.
