The car ride felt suffocating. Pepper was supportive in her own way, but she had endless questions, and the barrage of inquiries filled the air like static. Nathan sat quietly, his mind spinning with uncertainty, his fingers fidgeting in his lap.
When they finally pulled up to Nathan's modest home, his chest tightened as he saw his parents and little sister waiting anxiously at the window. Their relief was palpable, and it made Nathan's heart ache, knowing how much they must have worried.
Tony cleared his throat. "Pepper, can you ring the front door for me? I need a quick word with Sparky."
Pepper gave Tony a curious look but complied, stepping out of the car and heading up the walkway toward the family.
Nathan turned toward Tony, nerves already twisting in his stomach. What does he want to talk about? Was this Tony's way of telling him to stay quiet about everything that had happened? Or worse, was this where he got fired? His mind raced through every worst-case scenario.
"Hey, Sparky," Tony said, snapping him out of his spiraling thoughts. "I can see the gears turning in that head of yours. Relax." He chuckled softly, his tone light but affectionate.
