After saying their goodbyes to Emily, Jinx and Jessica left the adoption center in silence, their minds filled with a mixture of thoughts and emotions. The weight of the meeting had left them both feeling unsettled, unsure of what to make of everything that had been said. Sophie's biological mother was so young, so unsure of herself, and that made the whole situation even more complicated.

As they walked to the car, Jessica was the first to break the silence. "I didn't expect it to feel... like that. I thought she'd be older, more confident about what she wanted. But she just seemed... lost, Jinx."

Jinx nodded but didn't say anything. She was still processing everything—her defensive instincts hadn't had a chance to settle, and the vulnerability in Emily had thrown her off balance. It wasn't that she didn't understand why Emily wanted to know about Sophie, but the whole idea felt like an invasion, like someone trying to take something precious away from her. Sophie was theirs.

As they drove home, the silence between them grew heavier. Jessica kept glancing at Jinx, unsure whether to say something or let the quiet settle on its own. Finally, when they pulled into their driveway, Jessica couldn't hold it in anymore.

"Jinx, we need to talk about this," Jessica said, her voice firm, but with a tinge of frustration that had slowly been building up. "We can't just sweep this under the rug. Emily wants to see Sophie, and I think she has every right to know her biological mother, even if it's just a little bit. But it's hard to know what the right choice is."

Jinx's face hardened as she turned to look at Jessica. "Are you seriously saying we should expose Sophie to that? To her mother? The woman who didn't want her? The woman who wasn't ready for her?"

Jessica's face softened, but there was still a hint of determination in her voice. "I'm not saying we hand Sophie over to her. But I think she has a right to know about her past, about where she comes from. I'm not talking about bringing Emily into her life every day. But maybe Sophie needs to understand who she is and where she came from when she's older, in a safe way, with us there to guide her."

Jinx's grip on the steering wheel tightened, her jaw clenching. "I'm not ready for that, Jessica. I'm not ready to let anyone else have a say in Sophie's life. I promised her a family, a place where she could be safe and loved. If we let Emily in, even a little bit, who knows what that could do? Sophie could get hurt, again."

Jessica let out a frustrated sigh, rubbing her temples. "Jinx, I get that you're scared. I do. I'm scared too. But we're talking about Sophie's future here. She's going to have questions. And we can't just avoid them forever. She deserves to know about her birth mother. She deserves to know the truth, even if it's complicated."

Jinx shook her head, the anger bubbling up inside her. "What do you think you're doing, huh? You want to tell her about that woman who abandoned her? What's next? You think it's all going to be fine because we have control over how much Sophie knows?"

"Jinx—"

"No, Jessica, listen! I don't trust her! I don't trust Emily!" Jinx's voice raised with each word, her eyes flashing with the intensity of her emotions. "She gave up on Sophie! And now she wants to waltz back in and act like she's ready? I can't just pretend that's okay."

Jessica's face softened, but her eyes were firm. "I'm not saying we have to be okay with it. I'm saying we need to make the decision carefully. Together. We're a family now, Jinx. And we have to think about what's best for Sophie—not what's easiest for us."

Jinx's face twisted, and she threw her hands up in frustration. "I'm doing what's best for her! I'm trying to protect her, Jess! I don't want to lose her. I don't want anyone taking her away from me."

The silence in the car thickened, heavy and uncomfortable. Jessica took a deep breath and tried to steady her emotions. "I know you're trying to protect her. I am too. But protecting her doesn't mean keeping her in the dark forever. I don't want Sophie to hate us for shutting her out of her own story."

Jinx stared at the dashboard, her fingers still gripping the steering wheel, her chest rising and falling with deep breaths. "I just—I can't imagine her being hurt like I was, or like I did to others. I don't want Sophie to be in that kind of pain."

Jessica's voice softened, and she reached out, touching Jinx's arm. "You're not like you were, Jinx. You're not the same person anymore. And you've worked so hard to give Sophie a better life. But she's growing up. And with that, she's going to have questions. She'll want to know where she comes from. If we handle this together, if we take things slowly and make sure Sophie feels safe, we'll help her navigate it. But we have to be open with her."

Jinx swallowed hard, the weight of their conversation pressing down on her. "I just don't want to hurt her. She's my little girl, and I'm scared of making the wrong decision."

Jessica squeezed her arm gently. "We'll make it together, okay? We'll figure it out, step by step. We'll protect her, and we'll keep her safe. But we have to trust that Sophie can handle the truth when she's ready. We're in this together."

Jinx closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the raw emotions welling up inside her. Her heart ached for Sophie, for herself, for the unknown future ahead of them. But Jessica was right. She had to trust in their family, and in their ability to face challenges together.

Taking a deep breath, Jinx looked over at Jessica. "Okay. We'll figure it out. Together."

Jessica smiled softly, relieved that Jinx was willing to take that first step forward. "We will."

They sat in the car for a few moments longer, the weight of the conversation still lingering in the air, but at least now, they had a way forward. They were a family, and nothing could change that.
