The days after their meeting with Rax felt like a countdown to something inevitable. Jinx threw herself into work, tweaking old devices, setting up traps, and preparing for the fight she knew was coming. The workshop buzzed with a frenetic energy, a mix of Jessica's cautious optimism, Vi's battle-hardened resolve, and Jinx's relentless determination. Sophie, blissfully unaware of the looming storm, played quietly in the corner with a set of scrap metal toys Jinx had cobbled together.
But the tension was palpable. Even Susan, who had been doing her best to adjust to this alien world, seemed on edge. Despite her calm demeanor, her questions—about the strange technology, the endless layers of Zaun, and the people Jinx had once called allies—betrayed her unease.
One evening, as Jinx worked late into the night on a turret-like contraption, Susan approached her, a steaming cup of something close to tea in hand.
"You've been at this for hours," Susan said gently, setting the cup down beside her. "You should take a break."
Jinx didn't look up, her hands steady as she soldered a wire into place. "Can't afford to. Not when they could show up any day now."
Susan hesitated, watching her daughter-in-law closely. "You're preparing for a fight. But Jinx... do you think it has to come to that? Is there no other way?"
Jinx sighed, finally setting her tools down. She looked at Susan, her face a mix of exhaustion and determination. "You don't know what the F.O.C. is capable of, Susan. They don't just take what they want—they destroy everything in their way. If we don't stop them, they'll come after Sophie. They'll come after all of us."
Susan nodded slowly. "I understand that. But... you're not alone in this. You have Jessica. Vi. Even me. You don't have to shoulder this burden by yourself."
Jinx's expression softened, the walls she always kept up cracking just a little. "I'm not used to people sticking around," she admitted quietly. "Not used to... family."
"Well, get used to it," Susan said with a small smile. "Because we're not going anywhere."
For the first time in what felt like days, Jinx allowed herself to smile back.
The Flare
The plan to contact Vi with the blue flare had gone smoother than Jinx had expected, but now that Vi was fully in the picture, the weight of their shared history pressed down on both sisters. Jinx had told Vi everything—about the F.O.C., about Sophie, about how she had ended up back in Zaun. And while Vi had been supportive, there were still questions she couldn't bring herself to ask.
Late one night, after Sophie had gone to bed and Jessica was helping Susan navigate the rudimentary stove in the workshop's kitchen, Vi and Jinx found themselves alone on the balcony overlooking Zaun. The city stretched out before them, a patchwork of lights and shadows, smoke and steel.
Vi leaned on the railing, her arms crossed. "You never answered my question," she said, breaking the silence.
Jinx, who had been fidgeting with one of her gadgets, glanced up. "What question?"
"Why now? Why come back?" Vi's voice was steady, but there was a hint of vulnerability beneath it. "After everything that happened... why risk it?"
Jinx hesitated, her gaze drifting to the skyline. "I didn't plan on coming back, Vi. I was trying to keep my family safe, and... I guess I thought I'd run far enough that the past wouldn't catch up to me. But it did."
Vi was quiet for a moment before she spoke again. "And us? Did you ever... think about coming back? Before all this?"
Jinx turned to her sister, her eyes filled with a mixture of regret and longing. "Every day. But I didn't think I could face you. Not after everything I did. I figured you were better off without me."
Vi's jaw tightened, but she didn't look away. "You were wrong, Jinx. I never stopped wanting my sister back."
Jinx swallowed hard, the weight of Vi's words hitting her like a punch to the gut. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "For all of it."
Vi's expression softened, and she stepped closer, pulling Jinx into a hug. It was awkward at first—tentative, like they were both afraid the other might pull away. But when Jinx finally let herself relax into her sister's embrace, it felt like a piece of her that had been missing for years had finally clicked back into place.
The Calm Before the Storm
As the days went on, the family settled into a rhythm. Jessica and Susan worked on reinforcing the workshop, setting up defenses, and gathering supplies. Vi kept a close eye on the streets, using her connections to monitor any signs of the F.O.C. Jinx threw herself into her work, designing weapons and devices with a single-minded focus.
But there were moments of normalcy, too—quiet meals shared around a makeshift table, laughter as Sophie played with her grandmother, whispered conversations between Jinx and Jessica late at night. For a little while, it almost felt like they could pretend everything was normal.
Almost.
A New Threat
One evening, as they sat around the table discussing their next move, there was a knock at the door. Everyone froze, the tension in the room palpable.
Vi was the first to react, grabbing her gauntlets and motioning for everyone to stay back. Jinx grabbed a weapon she had been working on—a sleek, rifle-like device—and positioned herself near the door. Jessica clutched Sophie tightly, her heart pounding in her chest.
The knock came again, louder this time.
Vi glanced at Jinx, who gave a small nod. Slowly, Vi opened the door.
Standing on the other side was a young woman, her face streaked with grime and her eyes wide with fear. "Are you Jinx?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Jinx stepped forward, lowering her weapon slightly. "Who's asking?"
The woman glanced over her shoulder nervously before speaking. "The F.O.C. is coming. They're not just after you—they're after anyone who gets in their way. You don't have much time."
Jinx's grip on her weapon tightened, her mind racing. "How do you know that?"
"Because they're after me too," the woman said, her voice breaking. "Please. I need your help."
Vi and Jinx exchanged a look. It was clear that whatever was coming, it was bigger than they had anticipated.
And it was only a matter of time before the storm hit.
