I sat down, letting Hawks do the talking as I prepared the words I had to say in my head.My Landlord accepted the praise and formalities and kind words Hawks handed out charmingly before he sat down next to me and the Landlord in front of us. The little office wasn't build for large meetings, though it was good enough for this small conversation.
"So like," I spoke up, "I want to move to a different apartment."
Hawks nodded. "Cause you're a scammer."
My landlord raised an eyebrow.
"Okay, so like, I didn't properly do my research before, and that's my bad, honestly," I smiled sheepishly as I tried to save the harsh words dealt by Hawks.
"Not sorry," Hawks said with a charming smile.
"Er—" I frowned, "Are you trying to get me into trouble?"
"Nope," Hawks said, or should I say chirped, brightly, "I'm just waiting to say that your lovely landlord broke several laws."
The landlord did flinch, and I hesitated to scold Hawks for being rude.
"You can't stop a contract that goes on for two more months."
"Er..." I turned to my homework; the files I had gathered were lying in front of me, though did I need them?
"Okay, so like," I sighed, "Apparently I can take this to court, though I didn't want to mention it because... well..." I sighed, "I would like to solve this the simple way, please?"Hawks gave me a glance.
"You sure? You'd get your money back if we took this to court.""It feels mean though," I said.
The landlord was staring at us, trapped.
We had figured it out... not that it was hard..."Fine, I'll cut the contract short— on one condition."
The landlord tightened her lips."You're not in the position to set conditions here," Hawks smiled.
I blinked twice before I nodded. It felt so mean, though Hawks was right.
"Fine." The landlord said annoyed.
I handed her the papers she should sign before I got up and put everything back in my bag.
"That was a lovely conversation," Hawks said as he got up, "Someone will come by later this week to see wether there's anyone else getting robbed of their money."
As we walked out, I felt kind of wrong.
"Do you think we were too hard on her?" I bit my lip. "I feel bad."
"She wronged you," Hawks said, "And if you don't stand up for yourself, who will do it for you?"
I sighed and held the strap of my leather bag. "Now I need to look for a new apartment."
"You can live at mine for the time being," Hawks said casually.
I glanced at my shoes. He was really offering?
The idea of it seemed... safe.
He had every chance to pick me up and deliver me to 'him'.
Why didn't he?
Because I could trust him."Honestly," I smiled, "I would like that."
"Great! Let's go now."
"Shouldn't we feed Fiona about now?"
Hawks turned back to the building. "We're moving now!"
I sighed and followed him. Today was very active for a relaxing day off.
Not that I minded it. My stuff was easy to pack.
