Eli hated when she dreamt her visions. It had never happened before, but tonight she starred in her own future. Something else that had never happened before. Either way, she knew she hated it.

It began with her mother being torn from the kitchen table, where she had been helping her teenage daughter with homework.

Two men dressed in all white, piercing her mother's neck with a needle when she had refused to simply up and go and demanded answers from her intruders.

Falling limp only moments later.

Eli screamed and cried and tried to follow after her mother, but was kicked back into the house with force by the men in white. They slammed the door behind them, leaving Eli reeling to the floor.

As fast as she could, she stood, rushing for the window to see where they had gone, only seeing the side of the van as they drove off. Eli left the window, stumbling to the house phone to dial the police.

"911, what's your emergency?"

"Please! Please send help! My-my mom's been kidnapped. Two men just came in and-and took her. They drugged her, I think. I tried to follow after her, but I couldn't I—"

"What's the address?"

"12 Faroe Lane, please hurry! They were in a white van, it had um, writing on the side!"

"Okay, I'm dispatching police to you now. Did you make out what it said?"

"Like-like, Echo or something? Wait, no, Eichen! It said Eichen!"

"Is this Cassandra Larkaris?" The dispatcher questioned.

"No-no, she was taken! That's my mom!"

"So who am I speaking to?"

"Eli, er, Evangeline."

"Evangeline Larkaris?

"Yes, ma'am." Eli cried.

"I'm afraid we won't be able to send officers out at this time. Cassandra Larkaris was registered and admitted to Eichen House under an advisory that her mental state had created her a danger to both herself and others. Until further notice will she be treated and cared for in Eichen."

"What?" Eli whispered, her voice cracking as she slid down the wall, back to the floor where she had been kicked previously. This time, she had been kicked for another reason. "What? But-but my mom is fine? She's not crazy or-or suicidal, okay? She's not—"

"I'm sorry, miss. You'll have to go directly to the station or institution to discuss this. There isn't much farther I can handle this case."

"They took my mom?" Eli cried, wrapping her arms around her knees as she rocked herself. "What am I supposed to do without my mom?"

"It's stated that a secondary guardian will come to care for you in the mean time. I'm sorry, miss."

Eli hung up the phone. There was no second guardian. Just as there was no one who was really sorry. She knew that, just as she does now.

But when Eli awoke from her vision in a cold sweat, rushing to tell her mother, she found that she was already too late.

When Eli dreamt her visions, she was always too late.
