Just in case anyone had been wondering, the reason Y/n's quirk can't work with her mother is because she doesn't know her. She died when Y/n was born, meaning that Y/n never got the chance to even talk to her. For Minumaki it's different. Before he had died, he was Y/n's popular classmate, but just because they never really talked didn't mean they didn't know who each other were. Y/n had known his name and had interacted with him in the past and saw him nearly everyday, that's enough to allow her quirk to work on him. Y/n never interacted once with her mother, so it doesn't work. For her quirk to work, she needs to interact or see that person a lot, just glancing at them once won't make her quirk work on them. I will be posting an better explanation of her quirk soon.
It had been a week. A full week since the entrance exam. Seven days since I'd been flung at a robot like a ragdoll. And an entire week since I'd nearly died, from fear more than anything else. The whole time, I'd been driving Nan and Pops up the wall, pestering them constantly about the mail. Every morning I'd hover by the front door, waiting to hear the familiar sound of the mailman's shoes stepping against the concrete. Minumaki wasn't much better. He'd taken to floating outside the door for hours, his glowing form an anxious blur. Not that he needed sleep, but he usually enjoyed a good nap. Not this week, though.
I was sprawled face-first on the living room carpet, groaning into the fibers as Pops muttered at the TV. His football team was losing badly, judging by the scowl on his face. The clock on the wall read 9:30 am. If the mailman was keeping to his usual route, then he should arrive any minute now. Almost like clockwork, Nan's voice rang out from the front hallway.
"Y/n! Get your ass over here! The mail's here!"
I bolted upright so fast my vision swam, launching myself off the floor and toward the door. Minumaki zoomed ahead of me, phasing right through Nan as he raced to get a look.
"Anything for me?!" I yelled, sliding into the hallway in my socks. Nan gave me a smirk, holding up a single envelope between her fingers.
"This what you're looking for?"
I didn't bother answering. I snatched the envelope from her hands and sprinted to my room, my heart pounding in my chest. Minumaki zipped along behind me, his glow even brighter than usual.
Once inside, I slammed the door shut and dropped into the chair at my desk, clutching the envelope like it was my only reason for living. My name was printed neatly on the front. "To Y/n L/n. UA High School." Minumaki read the text aloud, his voice filled with nervous energy. "This is it. This is the one!"
My hands trembled as I peeled away the red wax seal. Inside, instead of the paper I expected, there was a small metallic disk. I frowned, pulling it out and setting it on the desk. "What's this thing?"
Minumaki tilted his head, his ghostly form hovering closer. "Beats me. Maybe it's a fancy coaster? Or maybe we need to put it in a DVD player-"
Before he could finish, the disk flared to life, projecting a bright hologram onto the wall. The booming voice of Present Mic filled the room, nearly blowing out my eardrums.
"HELLO, POTENTIAL HERO!"
I yelped, toppling out of my chair, while Minumaki let out a startled shriek. He clutched his chest like he still had a heart to pound.
"It's the moment you've been waiting for!" Present Mic's voice echoed. "Your UA entrance exam results!"
Scrambling back into my chair, I fumbled with the disk, desperately looking for a volume button. Minumaki, still recovering from his scare, hovered behind me, his expression torn between awe and exasperation.
"You did AMAZINGLY!" Present Mic continued, his tone way too loud and enthusiastic. "You stayed focused, took down those robots with precision, and showed true heroism by prioritizing rescues! And let's not forget, you took on the Zero Pointer! No points for that, but wow! It was incredible to watch! You saved a lot of people that day, Y/n. I mean, us heroes would've stepped in if we thought anyone was gonna die. But still! You've got real hero material!"
The projection shifted to show clips from the exam, me sprinting across the battlefield, directing panicked students to safety, Minumaki's eerie yet mesmerizing quirk shielding others from falling debris. (On the screen it doesn't actually show Minumaki since he's a ghost, but it still shows when his quirk appears.) My stomach twisted as I relived those moments. It had been chaotic, but now, seeing it from the outside, I've realized just how much chaos it has been.
"But plot twist!" Present Mic's voice cut through my thoughts. "There's more to this exam than smashing robots. We didn't just score you on Villain Points, we also looked at Rescue Points! True heroes protect others, even in the face of danger. And you, Y/n, did exactly that!"
The screen showed my final score. 35 Villain Points and 42 Rescue Points. A total of 77 points.
"Which means..." Present Mic's grin practically radiated off the screen. "You and another student have tied for FIRST PLACE! Congratulations, Y/n L/n! Welcome to UA High School!"
For a moment, I couldn't breathe. First place? First place... FIRST FUCKING PLACE! The words echoed in my mind, each repetition more surreal than the last. Beside me, Minumaki's eyes were wide, and... were those tears? Ghosts could cry? Apparently, they could, because his translucent face was streaked with glowing drops.
"I can't believe it," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. My hands clenched the edge of the desk as tears blurred my vision. Minumaki didn't even try to hold back, floating in erratic circles as he sobbed with joy.
"Y/n," Present Mic's voice spoke again. "We expect great things from you. The world needs people like you to protect them. Welcome to the beginning of your hero training!"
The projection flickered and dimmed, leaving me and Minumaki in stunned silence. Slowly, a grin spread across my face, and I let out a laugh, a bright, unrestrained sound that echoed in my bedroom. Minumaki joined in, his laughter mixing with mine until we were both doubled over, giddy and overwhelmed.
This was it. The start of something incredible. I had done it... Mom, I hope you're proud... I never met you or knew you, but I know for a fact you'd want this for me.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Finally got the entrance exam results! I had tried my best to make it believable and all that. Sorry if I made any mistakes, please correct me if I did! And Just in case you didn't, please go to the top of this chapter and read the message I put there. It's pretty important for the plot.
