Warnings: mention/talking of slaughtering animals
The next day, (Y/N) had to start trying out the jobs at the Glade.
She already knew what job she wanted, of course. She wanted to help getting out of that place, so the Runners was the job to go to.
However, she was told that she had to try out every job none-the-less before she decided anything. She protested, but she ended up obeying. She had no choice after all. If it was the norm there, then she would follow it.
They made her start with a job (Y/N) thought was one of the worst, the Slicers. She had to spend the entire morning there and, as she had predicted, she had a terrible time at the Blood House. She wasn't able to deal with all the blood and never got the courage to slice the throat of any of the animals. Even their loud squealing or squawking was unbearable.
The Gladers laughed loudly when, at some point, they saw her run out of the Blood House and throw up her breakfast behind the nearest corner. It was safe to say that she wouldn't pick the Slicers.
That afternoon, (Y/N) tried the Med-jacks. It was easier work and a bit less demanding. She found it was something she wouldn't exactly mind doing if she really had to.
Then, at the end of the day, she went to the Cooks and helped them cook dinner. She followed instructions well and ended up being complimented by Frypan.
However, cooking wasn't something (Y/N) felt eager to do. It wasn't the way she wanted to contribute.
Newt had been a sweetheart and waited until Frypan allowed (Y/N) to leave the kitchen and have dinner herself. The blond smiled at her when he saw her and together they went to get a plate with food.
They sat down at a table, facing each other.
"Wasn't expecting you to come spend time with me." The girl commented calmly, making Newt look at her questioningly.
"Why not, Greenie? Haven't seen you all day today." He replied and the girl shrugged with a small laugh.
"I could tell I annoyed you yesterday with all the questions and always talking about the Maze. I thought you'd be avoiding me for a while after that." She explained and Newt chuckled.
"Nonsense, Greenie. Your dashing personality captivated me the second you opened your mouth yesterday." He joked, making her laugh at how he made his accent sound very posh. Then he turned more serious. "Don't get me wrong, you're insanely stubborn and I can't help but feel you're gonna be a bloody pain in the ass in the future, but that's not enough to make me avoid you. I can take it." He answered truthfully and (Y/N) smiled thankfully.
She enjoyed spending time with him, it would be a shame if he stopped wanting to deal with her.
They both started eating. After a few seconds, Newt looked at her again.
"I heard you had a fun time at the Blood House, this morning." He joked, watching for her reaction.
"I guess news travel fast." She chuckled before scrunching her nose at the memories in that place. "It was freaking terrible, I hated it." She admitted and Newt chuckled as he put food in his mouth.
"It's normal. It's not an easy job for anyone. We're actually lucky the Slicers are able to do it. Otherwise we wouldn't have this." He said as he pointed to the meat on his plate.
