"you shouldn't be able to see me."
in school, there is one person kim taehyung despises the most: jeon jungkook, taehyung's homophobic bully.

later that day, after taehyung had left, jungkook stood in the center of the university library, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his jacket.
his eyes scanned the endless spines until he found the section he'd looked up online: mythology and folklore.
he stepped into the aisle, the faint scent of old paper wrapping around him. the bookshelves seemed to stretch endlessly. he frowned, fingers brushing against the spines until they landed on one with a faded, black cover.
"a guide to otherworldly lineages."
the title was embossed in peeling silver, the edges of the cover worn. he pulled it out and flipped it open, his eyes scanning the table of contents.
shadowborns. the word sat on the page like it was mocking him.
"this is so stupid," he muttered under his breath, glancing around to make sure no one could hear him. the last thing he wanted was someone catching him reading this crap. still, his fingers moved on their own, flipping to the page listed.
the text was dense, written in small, cramped letters that made his eyes strain. the words seemed to blur together at first, but then they sharpened, and he found himself leaning closer.
"shadowborns are said to be descendants of an ancient bloodline connected to the void between realms. they are marked by distinct abilities, e.g. perception beyond the ordinary, manipulation of energy and other magical creatures as well as switching between the realms. their eyes are often described as glowing or shifting in unnatural hues when abilities are triggered."
he paused, the words sticking in his mind. glowing eyes.
his jaw clenched as the memory of taehyung's words from last night echoed in his mind.
he slammed the book shut, heart beating faster than he liked. "it's bullshit," he muttered to himself, sliding the book back onto the shelf like it burned to hold.
but his hand hesitated before leaving the spine.
fuck it.
a second later, he yanked it back out, this time tucking it under his arm.
he moved to a table tucked in the corner of the library, far away from anyone else. slouching into the wooden chair, he flipped open the book again, skimming through the pages. every word made his chest feel tighter.
"shadowborns often experience heightened sensitivity to their surroundings, vivid dreams that blur the line between different layers of reality, and a natural resistance to conventional logic."
