The moon hung high in the sky, casting a pale light over the battlefield as Ryumi, Sasuke, and Tetsuya faced off against a group of rogue shinobi. The rogues were well-trained and cunning, their attacks coordinated to exploit any weakness. Ryumi moved swiftly, her chakra-infused strikes landing with precision, while Sasuke and Tetsuya held their ground, countering the rogues’ relentless assault.
As the battle raged on, Ryumi found herself separated from the others, three opponents closing in on her. She deflected a barrage of kunai and managed to land a solid blow on one of them, but the other two closed the gap quickly.
"Ryumi!" Sasuke’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding.
He darted toward her, his Sharingan blazing as he intercepted an enemy's blade aimed at her back. The sound of metal clashing echoed through the clearing as Sasuke twisted his katana, disarming the attacker in one swift motion.
“Stay focused,” he said, his tone as calm as ever, though there was an edge of concern in his voice.
“I’m fine,” Ryumi replied, her green eyes narrowing. “You don’t have to—”
Her words were cut off as another rogue lunged at her from the side. Sasuke reacted instantly, pushing her out of harm’s way. The rogue’s blade sliced across Sasuke’s side, drawing blood.
“Sasuke!” Ryumi shouted, her voice filled with panic.
She moved to his side, her hands hovering over the wound as if unsure whether to touch him. Her green eyes darted to his face, searching for any sign of how badly he was hurt.
“It’s nothing,” Sasuke said, brushing off her concern. He stepped forward, his Sharingan scanning the area for their remaining enemies.
“It’s not nothing,” Ryumi snapped, her voice shaking. “You’re bleeding.”
From a few steps away, Tetsuya watched the exchange, his expression unreadable. He noticed the way Ryumi’s hands trembled slightly as she reached for Sasuke, the way her usually composed demeanor cracked in her worry for him.
“Ryumi,” Sasuke said firmly, his gaze meeting hers. “Focus on the battle. I’m fine.”
Ryumi clenched her fists, frustration and worry swirling within her. She turned back to the fight, her movements fueled by a newfound determination to end it quickly.
The rogues, sensing their disadvantage, launched a desperate final attack. Ryumi and Sasuke moved as a unit, their coordination seamless despite the tension hanging between them. Sasuke’s Sharingan allowed him to predict their enemies’ movements, while Ryumi’s agility and raw power overwhelmed them.
Tetsuya joined the fray, his strikes precise but lacking the fluid synchronization Ryumi and Sasuke shared. As the battle came to an end, the last rogue fell, and the clearing grew silent once more.
With the danger gone, Ryumi turned to Sasuke, her eyes immediately finding the wound on his side. Blood stained his shirt, the crimson stark against the dark fabric.
“Sit down,” she said, her tone brooking no argument.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow but complied, leaning against a nearby tree. Ryumi knelt beside him, pulling out a small medical kit from her pouch.
“You should’ve been more careful,” she muttered, her voice low.
“I didn’t have a choice,” Sasuke replied simply.
Their eyes met, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to fade. There was a softness in Sasuke’s gaze that Ryumi rarely saw, and it made her chest tighten.
From his position a few steps away, Tetsuya watched the scene unfold. He noticed how Ryumi’s hands, though steady now, lingered on Sasuke’s wound a moment longer than necessary. He saw the way Sasuke’s gaze never left her face, even as she worked in silence.
“You two…” Tetsuya began, his voice breaking through the quiet.
Ryumi glanced up, startled by his voice. “What?”
Tetsuya hesitated, then shook his head. “Nothing.”
As they prepared to leave the clearing, Sasuke stood, testing his balance. Ryumi hovered close, ready to steady him if needed.
“You’re overreacting,” Sasuke said, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.
“You got hurt because of me,” Ryumi shot back, her tone sharp.
“I got hurt because I chose to protect you,” Sasuke corrected, his voice firm.
The weight of his words hung in the air, and Ryumi found herself unable to look at him. She turned away, her thoughts a tangled mess.
Tetsuya, watching from the sidelines, felt a pang of something he couldn’t quite identify. It wasn’t jealousy, not entirely. It was more the realization that no matter how much he wanted to be the one Ryumi looked at like that, her heart already belonged to someone else—even if she hadn’t admitted it yet.
---
As the trio continued their journey, the atmosphere remained tense. Tetsuya stayed a step behind, his thoughts swirling as he replayed the earlier exchange in his mind. Ryumi walked beside Sasuke, her green eyes occasionally flickering toward him to ensure he was okay.
Sasuke, for his part, seemed unfazed by the tension, his expression unreadable as always. But every now and then, his dark eyes would glance at Ryumi, the faintest hint of something unspoken lingering in his gaze.
The mission wasn’t over yet, but Tetsuya knew one thing for certain: whatever bond Ryumi and Sasuke shared, it was something he couldn’t compete with.
