On November 12th, 15 years of accounts were finally sorted.
Su Yinyin, Li Ruiyuan, Chu Shan, and Young Master Zhang all sat together in a teahouse to finalize the last of the accounts.
Fifteen years of time were condensed onto a single piece of paper.
Chu Shan couldn’t bring herself to smile, nor could she cry anymore.
“Go find him, I want the money back.”
At a small house on the border between the South and West City, the house only had two rooms. Madam Wei and son each occupied one room.
Madam Wei, in order to let her son study, had voluntarily taken the smaller room. The clothes and items she brought with her couldn’t even fit inside.
Outside, heavy snow was falling, and the charcoal fire inside wasn’t as good as in previous years. She had to reserve the best heat for her son. Madam Wei room was filled with a little smoke.
But Madam Wei smiled as she spoke. She had just returned from her relatives' house, looking very pleased.
“Son, this is a piece of literary work from the Jiang family at the Imperial Academy. Take a look.”
Wei Shusheng eagerly took it and flipped through the pages carefully.
The provincial exam in April was fast approaching. He had to pass it, no matter what. If he couldn’t pass, his rank must at least rise a little so he could be appointed as an official.
Only with an official post could the Wei family truly turn their fortunes around.
Recently, he hadn’t even left the house.
He was focused on preparing for the exam but also avoiding trouble.
Wei Shusheng hesitated for a moment. “Mother, has anyone come looking for us recently?”
“Are you talking about Chu Shan? How could she possibly find out where we’re staying?” Madam Wei laughed, “The capital is so big, she’d probably get lost.”
“Besides, you told her to settle the accounts first. She barely knows a few characters, do you think she could figure it out?”
Wei Shusheng was reassured.
The Chu family had indeed helped him a lot, but for the sake of his career, he still had to owe them something.
A true man cannot be bothered by small matters.
His mother’s maiden family was the Jiang family, his cousin was an official in the capital, a fifth-rank official.
The Jiang family had many descendants, but none at his age had passed the provincial exam.
He and the Jiang family complemented each other very well.
“That’s true, it’s almost the twelfth month, she’s probably already back in Binzhou.” Wei Shusheng continued, “Does my cousin know about this?”
Madam Wei shook her head. “Don’t worry, they know you had an engagement before. They don’t mind.”
“As for Chu Shan coming to the capital, of course, I won’t tell them. Even if they know, it doesn’t matter. Your cousin will help us handle it.”
Wei Shusheng was completely at ease now.
Nothing could stop his career.
The next year’s imperial exam, passing it would be best, but even if he didn’t, he would still be assigned an official post.
