Morning came too soon.
I had barely slept, my mind replaying the previous night's events, the unspoken tension between Jay and Jake, the way Sunghoon seemed to notice everything, the way Ni-ki's teasing always seemed to carry a little too much truth. It was all becoming too much, too fast.
When I finally dragged myself out of bed, the dorm was already filled with movement. The scent of coffee drifted from the kitchen, and the faint sound of music played from someone's speaker. I ran a hand through my messy hair and stepped into the common area, hoping to shake off the heaviness in my chest.
"Morning," Heeseung greeted casually from the couch, sipping on his coffee. He looked effortlessly put together, despite just waking up.
"You look like you barely slept," Sunoo pointed out, walking past me with a bowl of cereal.
"Thanks," I muttered, flopping onto the couch beside Heeseung.
"We have practice in an hour," Jungwon reminded, walking into the room with his phone in hand. "Eat something before we leave."
Jake emerged from the kitchen, tossing me a protein bar before sitting beside me. "Figured you'd be too tired to make breakfast."
I caught it easily, smiling despite myself. "Thanks."
From across the room, Jay leaned against the counter, watching the exchange. He didn't say anything, but I noticed the way his fingers gripped his coffee mug a little tighter.
.
Practice was intense, Jungwon was pushing us harder than usual, focusing on every tiny detail of the choreography. By the third run through, my legs felt like jelly, and I could barely catch my breath.
"Again," Jungwon called.
A collective groan filled the room, but no one complained.
As the music started, I forced myself to focus. I needed to keep up, to prove I could handle it. But halfway through the routine, I stumbled, missing a beat.
Jay was the first to notice.
"Y/N," he said, his voice sharp as he grabbed my wrist to steady me. "You okay?"
"I'm fine," I said quickly, pulling away.
"You don't look fine," Jake added, stepping closer. "Maybe you should take a break."
"I said I'm fine," I insisted, trying to ignore the concerned looks from both of them.
Sunghoon, standing nearby, sighed. "She's not going to stop unless you force her. We all know how stubborn she is."
"Exactly," I said, grateful for the backup, until I realized he wasn't entirely on my side.
Jay exhaled, clearly frustrated, but before he could argue, Ni-ki clapped his hands.
"Okay, everyone chill," Ni-ki said, grinning. "If Y/N wants to push herself, let her. Just means she'll be the first one to pass out."
I shot him a glare, but he just smirked.
"Alright, let's take a break," Jungwon finally said, sensing the rising tension.
I grabbed my water bottle and sat down against the mirror, closing my eyes for a moment.
I barely had a second to breathe before someone sat beside me.
"You have to stop overdoing it," Jay said, his voice softer now.
I sighed, opening my eyes to look at him. "I just don't want to fall behind."
"You won't," he said, searching my face. "But you can't keep acting like you have to prove something all the time."
His words hit harder than I wanted them to.
Before I could respond, Jake appeared in front of us, holding out an energy drink. "Here. This'll help."
I hesitated before taking it. "Thanks, Jake."
Jay didn't say anything, but I could feel the shift in the air as he stood up and walked away.
.
After practice, we stopped by a café near the studio. The group settled into a booth, and for the first time all day, the mood felt lighter.
Sunoo was happily scrolling through his phone while Ni-ki and Sunghoon argued about who had done the routine better.
I sipped my drink, letting the normalcy wash over me, until I felt someone nudge my foot under the table.
I looked up to see Jake smirking at me. "Feeling alive again?"
"Barely," I admitted.
"You need to take better care of yourself," he said, his voice teasing but his eyes serious.
Across the table, Jay set his cup down a little too hard.
Ni-ki, sensing the tension, grinned. "Uh-oh. Jay looks like he's about to throw his coffee at someone."
Jay shot him a glare. "I'm fine."
Sunghoon leaned back, clearly entertained. "So... who's going to admit they're jealous first?"
I nearly choked on my drink. "Sunghoon."
"What? I'm just saying what everyone else is thinking."
Jake sighed, running a hand through his hair. "No one's jealous."
Jay scoffed but didn't say anything.
Ni-ki leaned forward, smirking. "No one's admitting it, you mean."
I groaned, sinking into my seat. "I hate all of you."
Sunoo, finally looking up from his phone, grinned. "No, you don't."
I sighed. He wasn't wrong.
But as I glanced at Jay, then at Jake, and even at the knowing smirk on Sunghoon's face, I realized something.
This wasn't just playful teasing anymore.
Things were shifting, and I had no idea what to do about it.
