Narrator

Danielle was packing up to return to college. She didn't give Y/n a proper answer about what she thought real love was. In her eyes, love laid in actions. Y/n understood more actions than words. So, she opted to think things thoroughly instead of answering mindlessly.

Still, her lack of answer was eating at her the entire time...

So, she decided to get some advice from the person she looked up to the most.

- Danielle POV -

"Hey, Dad?" I needed some advice.

Y/n poured their heart out to me a few days prior and I wasn't sure how to really respond to their feelings. I wasn't usually so hesitant but the way Y/n behaved that day made it feel like it was something really important.

If I responded in a way that was not honest to myself, then I would feel like I completely betrayed Y/n.

Y/n was someone who valued honesty...

And I needed to be completely sure when giving them an answer.

"What's up, Princess?" Daddy looked a little concerned.

I sighed, grabbing a throw pillow, and sitting next to him on the sofa.

"What is real love?" I asked.

"What do you mean?" Daddy turned to look at me a little confused.

I took a deep breath and snuggled into his arm. "The other day, Y/n asked what I thought real love was and I couldn't really answer," I explained.

"You silly kids!" Dad chuckled.

I got a little annoyed and pulled away from him.

"Exactly," I bitterly answered.

The reason I couldn't really answer Y/n was because I didn't really know what love was. We were still just kids. Our love was childish or perhaps even toxic in the eyes of people who had been married for years.

I didn't know what their love was like.

I wanted to know.

I really wanted to know what the secret to being in love for so long was.

"Huh?" Daddy still didn't understand.

"Is this about You and Y/n?" He suddenly grabbed my hands.

I nodded a bit embarrassed.

Daddy would probably think Y/n, and I, were stupid for breaking up and getting back together.

Only childish people did that.

Daddy took a deep breath and let it out.

"Dani, real love is something everyone has to learn for themselves. I can tell you what it is but you really have to experience it yourself to know what it feels like," He began to explain.

"I just want to know how you and mom have stayed together for so long!" I whined.

I was so stressed out about having to go back to school and leaving Y/n without an answer, that I had no time for Daddy's philosophical explanations.

"Okay," Daddy laughed and pulled me into a hug.

"Your mom and I have stayed together for so long because we make promises and we keep them. Even if we break a promise, we always try to fix things. We try not to disrespect each other and we always do our best to show each other how much we care about one another," He finally answered my question...
