The ER was buzzing, as usual.
You barely had time to breathe as trauma after trauma rolled in. It was the middle of the night, and while most people were winding down for the day, the hospital was in full swing. Code reds were being called every few minutes. Nurses and doctors alike were sprinting in every direction, some with patients in tow, others already prepping for the next emergency.
And through all the chaos, there was one constant: Jae won.
You could hear his voice as he barked out orders to the residents, guiding them through complicated procedures, his movements swift and sure. But despite his efficiency and sharp focus, his eyes always found their way back to you.
There was something about the way you moved, the way you managed to juggle so many things at once without ever breaking a sweat. You were calm, collected, almost too graceful for a place as frantic as the ER. Every time you rushed past him, or gave a patient a reassuring smile, or simply glanced over your shoulder, it made his heart race just a little faster.
It was a strange feeling, watching someone so effortlessly calm, all while chaos reigned around them. Jae won had worked with many great doctors and nurses over the years, but you were different.
When you approached him after handling a difficult case, he noticed how the light in the hallway hit your face just right, making you look almost ethereal. His heart skipped a beat. He had always admired your professionalism, but something about seeing you in action every day was... making him feel things he had long since convinced himself to ignore.
You handed him a chart as you leaned against the counter, glancing over at him with a tired but satisfied smile. "How's our patient?"
"Stable for now, but we need to keep an eye on him. Vitals are improving, though. Nice work," Jae won replied, his eyes softening as they met yours.
You chuckled lightly, brushing a stray lock of hair behind your ear. "You too, Dr. Yang. You're doing great, even when you're not looking."
Jae won blinked. "I don't know what you mean."
You raised an eyebrow. "Oh, please. Every time I'm in here, I feel your eyes on me like you're trying to make me nervous."
A small grin tugged at the corner of his lips. "What can I say? You make my heart race."
Your eyes softened as you smiled back at him, warmth spreading through your chest. But before you could reply, a loud crash echoed through the hallway.
Back to reality.
The next few hours were a blur of activity. You hardly saw Jae won, as he was in and out of rooms, coordinating with the rest of the staff. And yet, despite the frantic pace, the two of you found small moments to exchange glances, brief smiles, little pockets of warmth amidst the storm of work.
You were scrubbing in for another surgery when you heard someone call your name from behind.
"Y/N!"
You turned around to find Jae won, looking unusually flustered. "What is it?"
His hand was clutching a cup of coffee, and there was something almost shy in his demeanor as he held it out to you. "I know it's chaotic, but... I thought you could use a break."
You blinked, a bit surprised by the gesture. "You brought me coffee? With everything going on?"
He shrugged, looking away for a moment before meeting your eyes again. "I figured you could use it. You're always so calm under pressure, but you deserve a moment to breathe."
You couldn't help but smile at his thoughtfulness. No one ever saw the side of him that was so caring.
"Thank you," you said softly, accepting the coffee and savoring the warmth. "It means a lot, Jae won."
The moment stretched on a bit longer, the noise of the hospital almost fading into the background as the two of you shared a quiet, tender exchange in the middle of all the madness.
But just as you were about to say something else, an alarm sounded.
"Code blue in room 12!" someone shouted.
Your heart skipped a beat, and without thinking, you handed the coffee back to Jae won. "I have to go. We'll talk later."
You hurried off to the patient's room, and Jae won watched you go, his chest tightening at the sight of you rushing into action. The calm, beautiful strength you always displayed, it was irresistible.
You never had the luxury of indulging in moments like these. Not while on duty. But no matter how crazy the job got, the brief flashes of connection with Jae won felt like a reminder that, maybe, there was more than just the chaos.
The hours ticked on, the stress mounting as trauma after trauma poured in. But even in the heart of the madness, there were those small moments, those stolen looks and shared smiles, that kept both of you grounded.
The ER was a place that never slowed down. But somehow, in the midst of it all, you and Jae won kept finding each other.
The last trauma of the night was a young woman who had been hit by a car. Her injuries were severe, but after hours of work, you managed to stabilize her, and she was sent off to surgery.
You sighed in relief, exhausted but satisfied with the outcome.
"Good job, Y/N," Jae won said, his voice soft, but his eyes filled with pride. "We did good."
You smiled back at him, despite the exhaustion creeping up on you. "We did."
He stepped closer, his hand brushing yours in a fleeting touch that made your heart skip. He didn't say anything more, but his gaze lingered a little longer than usual. A silent acknowledgment of everything that had passed between you.
You both knew the hospital would always demand your attention, that there would always be another patient to save, another crisis to handle. But maybe, just maybe, you could make room for each other amidst the chaos.
And for now, that was enough.
