The ER was as chaotic as ever. It always was. Constant beeping monitors, the frantic shuffle of nurses and doctors, the urgent calls for help echoing down the hallways. Amidst all the madness, Yang Jae won found himself looking for one thing, and one thing only: you.
You were as calm and composed as always, a steady presence amidst the storm, moving from patient to patient with that same serene professionalism that never failed to leave him in awe. He couldn't help it; his eyes were drawn to you no matter what was happening around him.
You caught his gaze from across the room, and in that instant, you both shared a brief, wordless connection. Jae won felt his heart race as your eyes locked, and he couldn't suppress the soft smile that tugged at his lips.
It was in moments like these, when the world seemed to pause for just a second, that he wished things could be simpler. That the never-ending pressures of the ER would just disappear, if only for a minute, and he could steal a moment with you without any distractions.
The thought of kissing you, just once, even if only for a second, crossed his mind. It would be perfect. But, of course, it wouldn't be that easy, not when Baek Kang hyuk was in the vicinity.
Jae won took a step towards you, his eyes glancing quickly at the door. The moment was right. No one was looking.
He casually walked up to you, his heart pounding with anticipation. "Hey, Y/N," he murmured, his voice just low enough for you to hear. "You've been working hard today. Maybe you deserve a little... break."
You looked up at him, meeting his gaze with that familiar, teasing smile. "Is that so?"
Before you could say anything else, Jae won took a half-step closer. He could feel the heat of your proximity, and for just a split second, he thought, This is it. I can finally steal a kiss.
But of course, that's when Baek Kang hyuk decided to make his grand entrance.
"Yah! No.1! " Baek Kang hyuk's voice boomed, as if on cue. The older doctor strolled into the ER with his usual air of confidence, his eyes immediately catching Jae won's movements. "What do you think you're doing, huh? I need you in Trauma Room 2, stat."
Jae won froze, the disappointment flashing across his face for a split second before quickly masking it with a professional smile. "Right, Trauma Room 2," he muttered, turning toward Baek Kang hyuk with a sigh. "I'll be right there."
You couldn't help but chuckle at the timing. Of course, Baek Kang hyuk would swoop in just when you and Jae won were about to have a moment.
"I'll let you get to it," you said, your voice light but filled with that playful edge. "Can't have you ignoring your boss."
Jae won shot you a look, his eyes twinkling with unspoken words as he gave you a small shrug. "I swear, that man has no sense of timing."
"Tell me about it," you teased, giving him a sympathetic look as he rushed off to Trauma Room 2.
The rest of the afternoon went by in a blur. No matter how many times Jae won tried to make his way back to you, it seemed like Baek Kang hyuk was always just one step behind, pulling him into another case or making some remark about "getting your head in the game."
By the time things started to calm down and the evening shift rolled around, Jae won felt as though he'd been chasing that moment with you all day. But no matter how much he tried, it seemed like fate (and Baek Kang hyuk) had other plans.
You had just finished wrapping up a case when Jae won finally approached you again. This time, there was no one in sight. No Baek Kang hyuk, no emergency alerts. The ER was quieter, and it seemed like the universe was finally giving him the green light.
He stepped closer, his hand brushing lightly against yours as he spoke in a low voice. "Y/N, I swear, I've been waiting all day for this."
You smiled, your heart racing a little at the look in his eyes. "For what exactly?"
Jae won's gaze flickered to the door, checking once more for any potential interruptions, before leaning in ever so slightly, his breath warm against your cheek. "For this."
Before you could react, his lips were just a breath away from yours. And then, the door slammed open again.
"No.1 ! We've got a new patient coming in! Get over here now!"
BAEK KANG HYUK. AGAIN.
You could see Jae won's frustration, but before he could utter a word of protest, you placed a finger gently against his lips, stopping him. "It's alright. Go. You've got work to do."
He sighed, his shoulders sagging in defeat as he shot one last look at you. "One of these days, I'm going to get my moment with you, I swear."
You smiled warmly, cupping his cheek for just a moment. "I'll be here, waiting."
And with that, Jae won reluctantly turned and walked toward the incoming patient, leaving you standing there, your heart full despite the interruptions.
Hours later, when his shift finally ended and the ER quieted down for the night, Jae won met you outside the hospital. The cool night air felt like a gentle reminder that, despite the chaos, there was always a moment of peace waiting for the two of you.
"I think tonight's the night," he said with a mischievous grin.
You raised an eyebrow, knowing exactly what he meant. "We'll see."
And as he leaned in, this time, there were no interruptions. Just Jae won, finally able to steal that kiss, as the rest of the world faded away.
