Tensions

A Few Weeks Later

Tensions between Yvette and me hadn't disappeared, but she'd kept her distance, for the most part. I still caught her watching me sometimes, that unreadable look in her eyes, but she hadn't tried anything. Yet.

Terence reassured me every time I mentioned my suspicions. "She's just trying to move on, (Y/N). Let's not think too much of it."

I wanted to believe him. Really, I did. But I knew better. Yvette wasn't the type to let go so easily.

And I was right.

Because one night, I caught her in the act.

That Night at the Glade

I had been heading toward Terence's workshop to return a pouch of pixie dust he'd left behind when I heard hushed voices coming from the glade. Normally, I would have ignored it—except I recognized his voice.

And hers.

Curiosity (and maybe a little jealousy) got the best of me, so I took cover behind a thick vine, peering into the moonlit clearing.

There they were.

Terence stood a few steps away from Yvette, arms crossed, his brows drawn in clear frustration.

Yvette, however, was looking at him like he had personally crushed her heart.

"Terence, please," she said, her voice quiet but urgent. "Just listen to me."

He sighed. "Yvette, we've been over this. You need to stop."

"I just don't understand!" Her voice wavered, but I couldn't tell if it was genuine or just an act. "We were perfect together! We could still be—"

Terence cut her off, his voice firm but not unkind. "No, we weren't. And I don't feel that way about you."

I saw her hands clench into fists. "But she—she took you from me!"

My breath hitched.

Terence took a step back, shaking his head. "No one took me from you, Yvette. I was never yours to begin with."

Silence.

Then, softly, she whispered, "I love you."

I tensed. My heart pounded in my chest.

Terence let out a slow breath. "I'm sorry, Yvette. But I love (Y/N)."

Her face crumpled. But then, just as quickly, she hardened her expression. She wiped at her eyes as if wiping away an entire fantasy she had built in her head.

"Fine," she said. Her voice was eerily calm. "If that's what you want."

I barely had time to react before she turned and flew off, disappearing into the night.

For a moment, Terence just stood there, running a hand through his hair.

That's when I decided to step out.

His head snapped toward me, his expression shifting from exhaustion to relief. "You heard all that, didn't you?"

I nodded. "Yeah."

His shoulders relaxed, and he gave me a small, tired smile. "I meant what I said."

I didn't even have to ask what he meant.

Instead of replying, I just closed the distance between us, wrapping my arms around his waist. He pulled me close without hesitation, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head.

Whatever Yvette had hoped to accomplish tonight, it hadn't worked.

Terence was mine.

And I wasn't letting go.
