"Is everything alright?" He asked gently, sitting down next to her. "You know you can talk to me if you need to."
Milly sniffed a few times before shaking her head. "Why would it help? There's no solution, and you're just going to try and fix everything."
Jake let out a soft sigh. "It might help just to let it all out. Believe me, I've been there. Sometimes, problems don't have easy solutions."
They sat in silence for a moment before Milly spoke up again, her voice trembling slightly. "It's Elliot."
Jake tilted his head in confusion. "Elliot? What about him?"
Milly let out a small laugh, wiping her eyes. "I shouldn't be laughing, but... you're a bit clueless, huh?" She looked at Jake, amusement flickering in her eyes despite her sadness. "No wonder Hailey finds you adorable."
"Huh?" Jake said, wide-eyed, clearly caught off guard.
Milly covered her mouth quickly. "Forget that," she said, her voice a bit shaky. "Yeah, Elliot. I think he likes someone else." Her frown deepened as she spoke.
Jake immediately pulled out a tissue from his pocket, handing it to her. "Oh... hey, it's okay. Have you asked him about it?"
"No, but I swear I saw him smiling and blushing around this other girl in our year. She's kind, caring, unlike me. I'm reckless, and rude. No wonder he might like her. He's probably just being nice to me because we're friends, and-"
"Whoa, slow down, Mills. You're going to give yourself a headache," Jake interrupted, giving her a soft smile. "But seriously, it's gonna be alright."
Milly managed to awkwardly return the smile, though her shoulders still shook slightly. They sat together for a while as Milly's breathing slowed, her tears stopping. Finally, the school bell rang, signaling that class would start in five minutes.
Milly stretched and stood up, trying to shake off the heaviness she had been feeling. "We should get going," she said. "You have science, and I'm pretty sure your favorite teal-haired lab partner will make your life miserable if you're late."
Jake shook his head, a mischievous grin forming on his face. "How about we do something else?"
"What do you mean?" Milly asked, raising an eyebrow, clearly curious.
"Skip with me. Detention will be worth it tomorrow. Plus, they can't really do anything to me because I already have detention every day after school for two weeks." Jake smirked, enjoying the idea.
Milly thought about it for a second, then laughed. "Alright, fine. I hate math anyway. But how did you get detention for that long?"
"Do you think giving an unauthorized speech on the intercom goes unpunished?" Jake replied, laughing at the memory.
Milly burst out laughing. The bell rang, signaling the start of class, but neither of them moved. After a while, they snuck off and had their fun. They ran around the school, leaving fake love notes in lockers to spark some playful drama, rearranged the teachers' desks in empty classrooms, and even snuck into the front office to pretend they were student volunteers helping out.
Jake made Milly forget all her worries. She was free again, her laughter echoing through the hallways.
"So, how are you going to ask Daisy out?" Milly asked, perched on Jake's back as they strolled through the school garden.
Jake sighed, shaking his head. "I don't think I will. I've started losing feelings. We don't hang out much anymore."
Milly smirked. "Oh? Is it because you might like someone else?"
Jake rolled his eyes. "Since when did you become so interested in my love life?"
"I dunno, just asking," Milly shrugged.
Jake chuckled. They continued walking until they were spotted by a teacher.
"Hey! You two! Are you skipping?!" the teacher shouted.
"Run!" Milly yelled, and the two bolted, laughing all the way. The teacher's voice faded behind them as they ran, still giggling.
Eventually, they lost the teacher and found an empty classroom. They sat there, catching their breath, waiting for the next class to start. Milly kicked her legs in the air on a desk, her face lit up with a wide grin.
"Thanks, Jake," she said sincerely, her voice soft.
Jake looked at her, confused. "For what?"
"For not trying to fix my problems but still somehow making everything better," Milly replied, her eyes glistening a little.
Jake smiled warmly at her. "Of course, you're one of my friends."
Milly suddenly got up and hugged him tightly. Jake smiled and hugged her back. They sat for a while, chatting about random things and showing each other funny stuff on their phones. Jake's phone buzzed, and when he checked it, he found 50+ messages from Hailey.
"She's going to absolutely murder me," Jake sighed, scrolling through the messages.
Milly giggled. "Yeah, Ms. President is gonna bite your head off for ditching her."
The bell rang, and they knew it was time to go. They walked out into the busy hallways, and as they approached Milly's classroom, Hailey and Sean were waiting for them.
"You two! What have I told you about skipping?" Sean scolded.
Both Milly and Jake nervously shrugged.
Hailey marched up to Jake, grabbed his ear, and tugged it. "You left me to work on our project alone!"
"Ouch! Sorry, princess! Ow!" Jake whined as she dragged him off by the ear.
As she pulled him down the hallway, Jake looked back at Milly, flashing her a grin.
She returned the smile, watching him disappear around the corner. Sean turned to her, his expression softening.
"I don't like that you skipped, but are you feeling okay?"
Milly smiled and nodded. "Yeah. I'm alright." And for the first time in a long while, she really meant it.
