The break room was quiet when you entered, the usual hum of conversation absent this early in the evening. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed softly, and the coffee machine in the corner gurgled as the last remnants of a fresh brew dripped into the pot.
You whistled a low, satisfied tune as you strolled in, still riding the high of getting under Keegan's skin. God, it was too easy. He was like a tightly wound wire, just waiting to snap, and you? You had way too much fun plucking at it.
Grabbing a mug from the cupboard, you poured yourself some coffee, inhaling the rich aroma before taking a careful sip. As you leaned against the counter, you stretched your leg experimentally. Still a little sore, but nothing that hindered you anymore. The stitches had done their job well.
As you took another sip, you heard footsteps approaching. Turning your head slightly, you spotted Logan stepping in, his expression neutral but observant. His sharp eyes flickered over you, and you could feel him sizing you up.
"Alright," he started, grabbing a cup for himself, "what the hell did you do?"
You blinked, feigning innocence. "Me? What do you mean?"
Logan scoffed, shaking his head as he poured his own coffee. "Don't play dumb. Keegan's been acting weird since the other day, and today? I pass by his office, and the dude looks like he's about to collapse from an existential crisis."
You couldn't help the grin that tugged at your lips. "Oh, that? I just had a chat with him."
Logan gave you a deadpan look. "Bullshit."
You chuckled, taking a slow sip of coffee before responding. "What? He's just a little tense, is all."
"Tense," Logan repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Y/N, the last time I saw Keegan that tense was when he got back from an op where half the team almost died. What did you do?"
You set your mug down and shrugged, that ever-present smirk still in place. "Nothing major. Just... sat on his lap."
Logan nearly choked on his coffee. "You did what?"
Now you were grinning outright. "You heard me."
Logan stared at you for a solid three seconds before exhaling heavily and pinching the bridge of his nose. "Jesus Christ."
You laughed. "Relax, Logan. It's not like I kissed him."
Logan groaned, rubbing his face before muttering, "Yet."
You took another sip, tilting your head at him. "Oh? You think I should?"
"I think," Logan said, pointing his coffee mug at you, "you're going to give Keegan an aneurysm before we even make it to our next mission."
You let out a bark of laughter, clinking your mug against his. "Worth it."
Logan shook his head, muttering under his breath as he took a sip of his coffee. "You're a menace."
You smirked, leaning against the counter as you swirled the liquid in your mug. "C'mon, it's fun watching him squirm."
Logan gave you a flat look. "You realize he's probably debating whether to kill you or himself, right?"
You let out an amused hum. "Yeah. Probably both, knowing Keegan."
Logan sighed, shaking his head again as he leaned his hip against the counter. "You got a death wish or something? Keegan's not the type to take this shit lightly."
You tilted your head, considering that for a moment. Keegan wasn't the type to joke around like this, not like the others. He was disciplined, serious, and brutally efficient. But that's exactly why it was so damn fun getting under his skin.
"He'll be fine," you said, waving a hand dismissively. "He just needs to loosen up a little."
Logan scoffed. "Loosen up? Yeah, sure, let's just have Keegan P. Russ suddenly develop a sense of humor. That'll go well."
You grinned, taking another sip. "I'm just helping him, Logan. Y'know, character development and all that."
Logan groaned. "God help us all."
Before you could respond, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Logan glanced toward the entrance of the break room just as Keegan appeared, looking just as irritated as you expected. His eyes immediately locked onto you, and if looks could kill, you'd be six feet under.
"You."
You raised an eyebrow, pretending to be surprised. "Me?"
Keegan's jaw ticked as he crossed the room with purpose, stopping just short of you. His balaclava concealed most of his face, but you didn't need to see his expression to feel the sheer frustration radiating off him. His stance alone said it all.
Logan took a cautious step back, clearly not wanting to be caught in the crossfire. "Welp, I'm out. You two have fun." He patted Keegan's shoulder before making a swift exit, leaving you alone with the seething soldier.
Keegan's voice was low and sharp. "I swear to God, Y/N, if you ever pull that shit again-"
You cut him off with a smirk. "What? Sit in your lap?"
His eye twitched. "Yes."
You leaned in slightly, lowering your voice just to mess with him. "You didn't seem to hate it that much."
Keegan's hands clenched at his sides, his whole body going rigid. Even with the balaclava covering most of his face, you could tell his jaw was tight, like he was grinding his teeth.
"You-" He exhaled sharply, running a gloved hand over his face like he was physically trying to wipe away his irritation. "You're fucking insufferable."
"And you're so easy to mess with."
Keegan inhaled slowly through his nose, his broad shoulders rising and falling with deliberate control-like he was begging whatever higher power existed for patience. Then, without another word, he grabbed your wrist and yanked you forward, startling you for the first time that night.
"Hey-"
"You wanna play games?" he muttered, voice dangerously low as he pulled you in close. His breath was warm against your cheek, even through the fabric of his mask. "Fine. But don't start something you can't handle, Y/N."
Your smirk faltered for just a second.
Just a second.
And Keegan caught it.
He let out a low, amused huff- not quite a laugh, but something close. Then, just as quickly as he grabbed you, he let go, stepping back with a satisfied look in his narrowed eyes.
Your heart was beating a little too fast now.
He turned on his heel, heading toward the door.
"Enjoy your coffee," he said over his shoulder before disappearing down the hall.
You blinked, standing there in stunned silence.
Did he just-
Did Keegan just flip the game on you?
You clenched your jaw, exhaling through your nose as you grabbed your coffee mug again.
Alright.
Game on, Russ.
