Percy's POV

We won the game! And the look on Clarrise's face when I passed the creek a split second before she did was even better than winning.

I barely escaped before she could murder me.

I went looking for Annabeth and found her heading off to call Sophie, Keefe, Biana, and the others.

I had to admit, Keefe's pranking skills were extraordinary. (Yes, I know big words. Mind your own business.) Ugh, ADHD. Why did we have to have it? Oh, right-battle reflexes. Wait So basically, without ADHD, we'd all be dead.

Wait. That was huge. Annabeth needed to hear this.

"Hey! Annabeth, did you know that without ADHD, we would have died?"

She barely reacted,as if I hadn't made the greatest discovery of all time."Yes, Seaweed Brain. Everyone knows that."

I pouted.No fair.

"Stop that face. It's too cute. I'll melt," she muttered.

I smirked and kissed her forehead. She blinked, then suddenly stiffened.

"Shoot. We were supposed to find the others. Stop distracting me."

She took off, and I barely had time to react before I was running after her.

We ran into Hazel, Frank, Leo, Nico, and Piper on the way. They tagged along to help us.

Then we heard it.

The unmistakable clash of swords. Weapons slicing through the air. A fight.

Annabeth and I locked eyes.

We ran.fast.

The sound led us to the far end of the creek, where the trees thickened and shadows stretched long. It was hard to see, but just then,a blinding red flash tore through the darkness.

Sophie was levitating mid-air, red energy crackling from her forehead in jagged bolts. My brain stopped.

What the Hades!?

I barely had time to process before those bolts slammed into the dracaenae-the snake-women monsters-disintegrating them into dust as easily as if someone had taken a celestial bronze sword to them.

Wait. When had the dracaenae even gotten here?!

I snapped my head around, searching for more monsters. Everyone looked fine,though Fitz was slightly injured. But something felt...off.

And Annabeth was staring at Sophie like she'd just been stabbed in the back.

Annabeth's POV

My mind was reeling. And I could do nothing to stop it

Sophie. Levitating. Shooting lightning out of her forehead. And disintegrating dracaenae with it.

What the Hades was happening?

I never thought Sophie would betray me. But then again... why was I even surprised? Why did everyone I care about either lie to me, betray me, or leave? Was I really that bad?

But if Sophie and her friends were monsters... then why were they fighting the dracaenae?

Sophie lowered herself to the ground, landing lightly, but the tension in the air was thick.

Then Piper screamed,the sound sharp and panicked.My stomach twisted.

I followed her gaze-and nearly screamed myself.

Biana was flickering in and out of visibility. And there was a dagger in her side.

Sophie spun around at the sound of Piper's scream. Her expression shifted in rapid succession:
shock, fear, realization, sadness, resignation.
