Harry: Why do you want it?
Hermione: The same reason everyone else wants it, to read up on the legend of the Chamber of Secrets.
Ron: What's that?
Me: You mean the Chamber of Secrets or 'read'?
Ron: Shut up, I mean the Chamber.
Hermione: That's just it, I can't remember and I can't find the story anywhere else.
Ron: That's a shame... let me read your composition.
Hermione: No, you had ten days to finish it.
Ron: Please, Hermione!
Hermione: No.
Ron: Y/N, how long is your composition?
Me: Three feet nine inches.
Ron: Please, let me read it!
Me: Alright, alright, but if professor Binns notices any similarities, I don't know you.
Ron: Okay. Thank you.
History of Magic was a tragedy of a subject. Professor Binns, the only teacher who was a ghost, was just reading history books in the same monotone voice the whole lesson, every time, sometimes stopping to tell us to write down a date or a name. He seemed as bored as we were, unfortunately he treated his work seriously and didn't let us just go outside or something.
Today at the lesson a miracle happened. To the amazement of Binns, Hermione put up her hand.
Binns: Miss. er...
Hermione: Granger, Professor. I was wondering if you could tell us anything about the Chamber of Secrets.
The whole class woke up and started looking at Binns with curiosity, which the professor could only dream to see before. Binns, however, blinked, amazement left his face.
Binns: My subject is History of Magic. I deal with fact, Miss Grender, not myths.
He started to read the book again as Hermione put her hand up for the second time.
Binns: Yes, Miss Grant?
This guy remembers what happened at 5.06 p.m on Wednesday, March 25th 1780 and can't remember the last name of a girl who introduced herself a minute ago. Or he doesn't care, I honestly respect that.
Hermione: Please, sir, don't legends always have a basis in fact?
Binns would probably continue reading, if not for the fact that this was the first time he saw anyone interested in his lesson.
Binns: Well, yes... one could argue that, I suppose. However, the legend of which you speak is such a very sensational, even ludicrous tale.
The class was still listening closely to his every word.
Binns: Ah, very well, The Chamber of Secrets... You all know, of course, that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago, by the four greatest wizards and witches of the age. The four houses were named after them: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin.
They built this castle together, far from prying muggle eyes, for it was an age when magic was feared by common people, and wizards and witches suffered much from persecution.
For a few years, the founders worked in harmony together, seeking out youngsters who showed signs of magic and bringing them to the castle to be educated. But then disagreements sprang up between them.
A rift began to grow between Slytherin and the others.
Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts.
He believed that magical learning should be kept within all-magic families.
He disliked taking students of muggle parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy.
After a while, there was a serious argument on the subject between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and Slytherin left the school.
