Now, have you considered ˹the idols of˺ Lât and 'Uzza, and the third one, Manât, as well? Do you ˹prefer to˺ have sons while ˹you attribute˺ to Him daughters? Then this is ˹truly˺ a biased distribution! These ˹idols˺ are mere names that you and your forefathers have made up—a practice Allah has never authorized. They follow nothing but ˹inherited˺ assumptions and whatever ˹their˺ souls desire, although ˹true˺ guidance has already come to them from their Lord.
Quran- 53:19-23

The idol that Amr bin Luhay brought to the Arabian Peninsula was Hubbal. Over time, other idols such as Al-Laat, Manaat, and Al-Uzza also gained popularity. The religion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)—whose core message was monotheism—polytheism and idol worship became the most prominent features of the faith of Arab society. Thus, the society that once upheld pure monotheism(Tawheed) gradually became known for its widespread idol worship.

Six Major Innovations in the Religion of Ibrahim (AS) during the Era of Banu Khuza'ah

Self-Devotion to Idols
Many people began devoting themselves entirely to idols. They would perform pilgrimage to them, circumambulate around them, and offer sacrifices to gain their favor. These rituals, once exclusive to the worship of Allah, were now redirected toward lifeless statues.

Diverting Portions from Allah to Idols
Although some portions of sacrifice were still consecrated to Allah, people often found excuses to transfer those portions to idols instead. They professed belief in Allah alongside the idols, equating them in reverence and ritual. Even when sacrifices were made for Allah, those portions would ultimately be offered to idols as well—reflecting the depth of their deviation.

The pagans set aside for Allah a share of the crops and cattle He created, saying, "This ˹portion˺ is for Allah," so they claim, "and this ˹one˺ for our associate-gods." Yet the portion of their associate-gods is not shared with Allah while Allah's portion is shared with their associate-gods. What unfair judgment!
Quran- 6:136

The believers are directed in the Quran to not consume things on which Allah's name has not been taken.
Do not eat of what is not slaughtered in Allah's Name. For that would certainly be ˹an act of˺ disobedience. Surely the devils whisper to their ˹human˺ associates to argue with you. If you were to obey them, then you ˹too˺ would be polytheists.
Quran- 6:121

Dedication of Animals to Idols
Certain categories of animals, such as Bahira, Sa'iba, Wasila, and Hami, were dedicated to idols. These animals were spared from all work and considered sacred in service to the deities. This practice was a clear deviation from the original teachings of Ibrahim (AS).

Allah has never ordained the ˹so-called˺ baḥîrah, sâ'ibah, waṣîlah, and ḥâm camels.
But the disbelievers just fabricate lies about Allah, and most of them lack understanding.
Quran- 5:103

Azlam (Divinatory Arrows)
The Arabs used a form of divination known as Azlam, which involved drawing lots using featherless arrows. There were three types: one marked "yes," another "no," and a third left blank. They falsely believed that the outcome of the arrows was guided by Allah Himself.

Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, and swine; what is slaughtered in the name of any other than Allah; what is killed by strangling, beating, a fall, or by being gored to death; what is partly eaten by a predator unless you slaughter it; and what is sacrificed on altars. You are also forbidden to draw lots for decisions. This is all evil. Today the disbelievers have given up all hope of ˹undermining˺ your faith. So do not fear them; fear Me! Today I have perfected your faith for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your way. But whoever is compelled by extreme hunger—not intending to sin—then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Quran- 5:3

Belief in Soothsayers, Diviners, and Astrologers
People had deep convictions in the predictions of soothsayers and astrologers. They sought knowledge of the unseen from them, which is considered an act of shirk (polytheism). Believing in such individuals or relying on them for guidance takes a person out of the fold of Islam.

Distorted Pilgrimage Practices
While some Abrahamic rituals were retained—such as devotion to the Holy Sanctuary, circumambulation, standing at Arafah, and offering sacrifices—these were often practiced alongside severe innovations. One such practice was that pilgrims coming from outside Makkah were required to wear Quraishi clothes during circumambulation. If they couldn't afford them, men would perform tawaf naked, and women wore only minimal clothing.
To negate this practice the believers are commanded by Allah,

O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship. Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not like the wasteful.
Quran- 7:31

Additionally, during the state of ihram (pilgrimage consecration), Makkans would avoid entering their homes through doors. Instead, they would dig holes through the back walls and enter through them, mistakenly believing such acts reflected piety.

They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about the phases of the moon. Say, "They are a means for people to determine time and pilgrimage." Righteousness is not in entering your houses from the back doors.1 Rather, righteousness is to be mindful ˹of Allah˺. So enter your homes through their ˹proper˺ doors, and be mindful of Allah so you may be successful.
