The first light of dawn crept in through the cracks in Anna's shutters, casting long, pale streaks across her bedroom walls. Her quilt was still pulled up around her shoulders, the edges curled from the night's rest, but something tugged her from sleep.
A gentle knock at the window.
Tap. Tap.
Anna blinked, disoriented for a moment, then slowly sat up and saw her winter cloak had slipped from the small chest at the foot of the bed and lay half-folded across her toes.
The room was quiet, cold, the wood floors barely creaking as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed.
Another tap.
She stood, still in her nightgown a soft, faded green cotton with tiny stitched flowers near the hem and padded across the floor rubbing at her eyes, heart already guessing who was waiting.
When she reached the window and pulled back the wooden shutter, a breeze rushed in, cool and sharp.
Hiccup stood just outside, clinging to the rope she'd left knotted beneath the windowsill, the same rope they'd used more than once when sneaking around Berk had still been a secret.
He gave her a sheepish smile, his breath visible in the morning chill, tousled hair ruffled further by the breeze.
"You used the rope?" Anna whispered, startled and mildly horrified as she shrank back from the window "Hiccup!"
He chuckled under his breath "you said it was always there if I needed it."
"Not when I'm—" she glanced down at her nightgown pulling the fabric over her knees, cheeks pink "I'm not even dressed!"
"You look fine," he offered with an innocent shrug, clearly amused as her eyes narrowed "you are so lucky I didn't throw something at you."
"I thought about knocking," he teased, adjusting his grip on the rope "but I didn't want to wake your mom and well... today's the day."
Anna sighed through a reluctant smile, brushing a strand of hair out of her face "give me a minute you're lucky I didn't lock this window."
"I brought the tail" he added quickly lifting the prosthetic tail up "fine" she said ducking back into the room, voice trailing "but if my mom sees you hanging there, you're explaining it."
Downstairs, the scent of simmering oats and pine greeted her, grounding her in the warmth of home.
The fire crackled gently in the hearth, and Iduna stood at the stove stirring a pot with calm precision where she had her flowing dark blue gown adorned with delicate floral embroidery along the hem and sleeves, its high neckline and sleeveless design exuding both elegance and strength.
A deep purple shawl draped over her shoulders, fastened with a brooch at her neck, its rich color contrasting with the soft blue of her dress and her dark tights and black shoes completed the ensemble, highlighting her timeless beauty and dignified presence.
As her mom's colors she wears complement her fair skin and warm, auburn hair but overall appearance suggests grace and strength, fitting for a queen who is both nurturing and powerful.
She turned at the sound of Anna's steps "morning, love" Anna kept to the wall, trying to smooth her hair down "Hiccup's here" Iduna arched a brow but said nothing at first but then with a soft smile "let me guess, rope?"
