The Texas sun beat down hard over the dusty training grounds outside Austin. A lone figure moved across the dirt with sharp precision—boots kicking up puffs of dust, fists slicing through the air with disciplined power. Angela Walker's final strike landed squarely on the padded chest of her sparring opponent, sending the larger man stumbling backward.

"That’ll do," came a voice from the sidelines.

Angela turned, breathing heavy but controlled. Standing there, arms crossed, was Cordell Walker—her father, her teacher, and the reason she was here today.

“Good balance,” he said, nodding with pride. “But your left side’s still just a half-step behind. You’re thinking too much.”

“I learned from the best,” Angela replied, wiping sweat from her brow. “And he never stopped pointing out my flaws.”

Cordell smiled. He was older now, the edges of his beard turning silver, but his eyes were just as sharp as ever. “You’re ready.”

Angela let that sink in. Today wasn’t just a training session. It was the final step.

The badge ceremony was simple—no fireworks, no speeches. Just the crisp pin of metal against her Ranger uniform and the weight of a legacy passed down.

"Texas Ranger Angela Walker," the Captain said. "You've earned it."

She shook hands with her fellow Rangers, trying to stay composed, but her eyes found her mother in the crowd—Alexandra Cahill-Walker, beaming with pride. Beside her, Cordell stood with a quiet confidence, hands folded, watching his daughter with that same fire he had when he first wore the badge.

Later that evening, the three of them sat on the porch of their family ranch, the cicadas humming softly in the background. Angela held her badge, turning it over in her hand, the weight of it both thrilling and daunting.

“You nervous?” Alex asked gently.

Angela hesitated. “I’m excited. But yeah... nervous too. I mean, I’m not you, Mom. I’m not Dad.”

“No,” Cordell said, his voice low. “You’re you. And that’s exactly who this world needs.”

Angela looked up at the sky, the stars beginning to prick the darkening blue. “I just want to do it right.”

Cordell put a hand on her shoulder. “Then trust your instincts. Protect the innocent. Fight for the truth. The badge doesn’t make the Ranger. The heart does.”

Angela smiled. The fear was still there, but something else had taken its place—purpose.

The next morning, a call came in. A missing girl. Small town. No leads.

Angela slipped the badge into place on her chest.

It was time.
