Chapter 29: Outpost 42

Start from the beginning

"Cassius, if you would," the now-named Cassius replied with a small bow.

"What's your purpose here then, Mr. Cassius?" Mullroy asked skeptically.

"And no lies," Mullroy added, raising his rifle threateningly.

"...right then. I confess," the stranger sighed and turned his gaze to them, their uneasy reflections reflecting in his glass-like visor. "It's my intention to toss you two over the railing, spy on that ship over there, figure out just why it's on its own and what secrets this outpost holds, then reduce this outpost to stardust using a Null Singularity that would make Cyn proud," he replied simply.

"...I said no lies," Murtogg protested, raising his rifle higher.

"I think he's telling the truth," Mullroy muttered, causing Cassius to tilt his head ever so slightly.

"If he were telling the truth, then he wouldn't have told us," Murtogg shot back.

"Unless of course he knew that you wouldn't believe the truth even if he told it to you," Cassius pointed out, causing Mullroy to nod triumphantly... only to freeze seconds later. Before either soldier could react, Cassius flicked his hand, a magic circle forming at his fingertips as two more appeared, one around each guard.

A snap of his fingers, and both guards only had enough time to look at each other with wide eyes before they were both promptly tossed over the railing and out of sight

A snap of his fingers, and both guards only had enough time to look at each other with wide eyes before they were both promptly tossed over the railing and out of sight. "How did those two even become guards anyway?" Cassius wondered, shaking his head as the alarms started to blare.

"The universe is a strange place," another voice agreed as a black, dragon-like gauntlet with grey spikes materialized on his arm. "Though I don't think a stealth mission involves alerting the entire outpost."

"Come now, Varun. Where'd be the fun in that?" Cassius asked as he vaulted over the railing and dropped, the ground cratering beneath his boots as he landed. "Hello there," Cassius greeted, causing the entire Platoon to turn, weapons raised.

"Identify yourself!" the Platoon leader ordered as the Abyssal soldiers fanned out, each pulling a handgun that morphed into a rifle that they promptly raised, taking aim at Cassius.

...uncultured swine. "For you... you can call me 'Cassius,'" the stranger stated, a dark grin forming on his features as he tilted his head ever so slightly. "Not that it'll matter much in the end."

"You really think you can take us all on?" the Platoon leader challenged as three Abyssal warships, except the one in the dock, maneuvered overhead, energy forming at their prows while the soldiers surrounded Cassius in a semicircle.

(A/N): Fun fact: it's included in the Abyssal Soldier Handbook to never surround an enemy in a complete circle.

In response, Cassius grinned, a sadistic glint in his eyes as he flexed the wicked talons of his gauntlet. "That depends... you really think you have a chance of winning?" he challenged.
