The meeting was dragging on. Numbers, crops, council votes, and the rebuilding efforts in the eastern border—everything felt like background noise. I tried my best to focus, but something inside me stirred. A pressure—not from my aching back or swollen feet, but from somewhere deeper. Somewhere tied to the soul.

I placed a gentle hand over my belly.

She was stirring too. Kicking, fluttering. Restless.

Then the door creaked open.

Ivan entered silently, his expression unreadable, until he leaned down and whispered low, “There’s someone who wishes to see you and Colton. He’s waiting in the balcony.”

My heart stuttered. I looked at Ivan’s face, and something told me—this wasn’t just someone. This was him.

I didn’t wait for approval or protocol. I stood up abruptly, causing the entire council to murmur and Colton to shoot up beside me.

“I’m ending the meeting early,” I said, breathless. “Something far more important awaits.”

We moved quickly through the palace halls, my pace more like a waddle-sprint, Colton at my side with his hand on my back as if worried I’d collapse. But I couldn’t stop. My chest was tight. My baby was kicking wildly now, as though he too recognized what was ahead.

I reached the grand balcony doors and flung them open.

And there he was.

Elliot.

But not the Elliot I last remembered—the smiling, childlike healer with too much sunshine in his pockets and laughter tucked behind his ears.

No. This Elliot was taller, leaner, worn by time and pain. His golden hair was longer, pulled back loosely. His robes were faded, travel-worn. And his eyes—oh gods, those tired, broken eyes—held centuries of grief and endless longing.

He stood still, hands fidgeting, as if unsure whether to run toward us or disappear entirely.

“Elliot…” I whispered.

His lips trembled into a broken smile. “Hi, Mikhail. You look… radiant.” Then his voice cracked, “And very round.”

I sobbed before I could stop myself.

I ran forward, arms open, nearly tripping, until I collapsed against him. He caught me in an embrace so tight, so trembling, it felt like the past was holding me together again.

“I thought I lost you,” I whispered.

He laughed softly, but there was no joy in it. “I think I lost myself, too.”

Colton stood beside us, silent, a hand on Elliot’s shoulder. There was no anger in his eyes, only cautious warmth. He, too, understood what we were reclaiming.

I pulled back to really look at him.

“You’ve changed.”

“I’ve died a thousand times, Mikhail,” he said quietly. “In every life, I meet him again. Liro. He’s always there. And I’m always the one who let him down.”

My heart shattered all over again.

“I remember what the Queen of the Merpeople said,” I murmured. “You’ll meet him again and again, in every lifetime, but never be allowed to keep him.”

Elliot nodded. “And I remember what I did. My sin. My betrayal. I don’t ask for forgiveness—”

“I already forgave you,” I whispered, interrupting him.
