"Ippo edhukku nee inga vandha?" I asked Amma for what must've been the tenth time

"Ippo edhukku nee inga vandha?" I asked Amma for what must've been the tenth time. My voice was clipped, my jaw tight. But she... didn't even blink. She sat there like I was a background noise she'd tuned out twenty minutes ago. Her only concern at the moment? The mushroom puffs on the plate.

"Shyla... naanga car-la poitu vandhrurom ma," Amma said casually, brushing the crumbs off her hand as if I wasn't glaring at her.

Shyla, busy trying to get Arjun into his socks and tie, looked up. "Appo naanu Arjun-um orey car-la poidrom. Neenga andha car-ah eduthutu ponga. Mathiyam confirm-ah velila dhana saapda porenga?"

"Ama di," Amma replied, taking another bite, "Neeyu Arjun-um vandhrunga. Naanga ponna paathutu vandhrudhom."

That was it. Just like that. My protests had been erased from the room. They were treating me like a sulking child, and that only fueled my irritation.

"Naa inga oruthan kathitu irukken... neenga paatukku kandukama pesitu irukkenga?" I snapped, finally.

Amma's eyes lifted just for a second before dropping back to her plate. "Naa dha solliten-le? Nee onnu vara vendam. Naa mattu paathu pesitu varen. Nee vandhilaye iru." She chewed calmly, each word like a wall I couldn't climb over.

I clicked my tongue hard and dropped beside her on the sofa. My fingers drummed on my thigh before I tried again, softer this time. "Maa... andha ponnu enakku vendam maa. Nee vera ponnu paaru maa." My voice cracked into something dangerously close to pleading.

"Vera ponna?" She finally frowned, as if my suggestion was offensive.

I jumped on the opening, nodding quickly, even managing a grin. "Ama! Indha college, school... university-la vela paakra ponna paaru maa. Appo dha future-la en pullaingalukku seat vaanga easy-ah irukkum!" I said, masking my desperation with fake practicality.

From the corner, Shyla stifled a laugh, while Arjun smirked like he was watching a circus. I ignored them both, keeping my eyes fixed on Amma.

But Amma only gave me that sweet, terrifyingly firm smile-the one that always meant I had already lost. "Indha ponnum University-la dha vela paakra. Podhuma?"

The floor might as well have dropped beneath me. My tongue clicked in defeat, and I sank back into the sofa, sulking like a boy who had just had his toy snatched away.

Inside, though, it was chaos. How do I tell her? How do I tell her that I was already trapped, already pulled under by someone else? That every grin, every reckless word of mine was tied to Agalya-even if she didn't recognise it yet.
