Most people in his position lived for this part of the day, not him. Not in the slightest.

He took his usual spot off in the corner away from the basketball courts, but close enough to the guard's shelter.

Too many assholes had it out for him.

Who knew the inmates in a maximum security prison had standards.

Problem was they all had a mother, a grandmother, a sister or a daughter that they loved. It didn't take him long to figure out that they didn't take  kindly to rapists.

He'd been here for nearly eight years and he'd been beaten more times that he could count, attacked in the shower, even while he slept.

It didn't matter where he tried to hide someone always found him.

The guards always taking their sweet ass time coming to his rescue, they'd told him he never should have fucked with one of their own.

He was screwed whichever way you looked at it.

"Miller!" He heard someone call his name, he looked up and found his least favorite guard waving him over.

He stood up flicking the cigarette to the ground stomping on it, effectively putting it out and made his way over to the guard.

His orange jump suit hung loosely from his slight frame, he never weighed much when he was on the outside and being here only made it worse, he shielded his eyes from the sun, "I'm pretty sure I still have twenty minutes" he hated the yard, but he hated the man in front of him more.

Anything to make his day worse.

The guard nodded, "That's true, but you've also got a visitor" he turned Miller around and promptly cuffed him, "and he doesn't like to be made to wait" he chuckled as he dragged him inside.

All of the guards were excited to see this visit go down.

They all knew what Jeremiah Miller had done, and not one of them liked it.

Kim filled Adam's travel cup with coffee, she knew he hadn't slept much even after their love making and she had drifted to sleep he was awake.

When she had told him about little Adam's confession about no longer fearing death it sent him in to a tailspin one that a week later she didn't think he had recovered from it.

"Alright, I gotta go" he took the mug from her hands, "I'll meet you at the hospital at ten, yeah?" He placed a chaste kiss on her cheek, "love you"

She smiled as he walked out, making a mental note to call Josh.

Josh and Adam were close and Josh being a social worker had come in handy for her and the kids. Adam the only one who balked at any type of therapy even after their son's doctors had recommended it for the entire family.

Cancer never effects just one person, it hits the entire family.

"Ready Mommy"Dani said her bag already packed for the next few days, "I'm happy I'm going to Aunt Jen and Uncle Sean's, Caleb is a pain" she plopped down on the couch, "where's Adam?"

Kim glanced at the clock, "he's fine, we don't have to leave for another hour" she sat next to Dani, "we have time for me to paint those nails" she pointed at Dani's hands.

"Really?"

"Yep, go get your polish" Kim beamed as Dani took off.

Her little girl had grown up a lot the last few months, it amazed her at how much. She couldn't help but feel cancer had stolen a bit of her childhood as well.
