"Bitch, I am not," she denied. It only made her cheeks redder.
Caty and I erupted in laughter. "You should go look in a mirror."
"Care to share what's so funny?" Brookes asked as she approached us.
Lia sent me a glare.
"Lia was just caught staring at one of your guests," I explained, giggling.
"Who?!"
We looked around until we spotted him, and then pointed Brookes at his direction. "That guy. Who is he, anyway?"
A grin spread across Brookes' face. "That's Kevin. Neighbor." Then she leaned in and whispered, "he's single, by the way."
It was enough to get Lia speaking again. "Is he now? Where exactly is his house?" she asked with a knowing smile on her lips.
"Three houses down."
"Tell me more."
The brunette suddenly frowned. "Oh, shoot. He's a single dad." She whipped her head around. "That kid he's approaching right now, that's his daughter, Keena."
We saw Kevin carry the little girl and place her on his lap. He then gave her a cupcake and assisted her in eating it.
"Damn."
"Hi, ladies," Chadd interrupted. "Glad you all could make it!"
"Hey, Chadd," we greeted in unison.
"Mind if I borrow my wife for a while?" he asked sweetly.
Brookes gave him a questioning look then faced us. "I'll be back. Enjoy the rest of the party, okay? Get more food. We'll drink soon," she promised before leaving.
Slowly the guests went home one by one and the party was officially over in an hour. The girls and I stayed, as was planned. Scott arrived a few minutes earlier and was currently talking to Benjamin and Chadd. The twins were inside the house with Chadd's parents while we were all still in the garden, each group occupying a table.
"Finally!!!" Brookes slumped to her seat and let out a deep sigh. "I. am. sooo. tired."
Caty handed her a glass of wine. We already took the liberty of finding a bottle and pouring ourselves a glass each.
"Thank you."
"That was one hell of a party you threw, love," commented Caty.
"Remind me again when you became supermom?"
The brunette chuckled. "I am so not a supermom."
"Uh, yeah you are," I affirmed. "You travel everyday to the city to work in one of the more demanding industries, you go home and attend to your husband and your twins and your whole household. Yet you still manage to look like... that. How dare you."
She shook her head. "First of all, shut up. I look like I haven't slept in months. Second, you are literally describing the life of all the working moms out there. And it's not like I do this alone. Chadd helps out a lot. So do our parents.."
"Well you're still supermom by our standards if we're comparing our lives to yours, especially considering you didn't want kids in the first place and now you have two!" exclaimed Lia.
Brookes shrugged her shoulders. "More like regular mom. Hell, I'm not even sure I'm doing the right things. They grow up so fast I can barely keep up! It's like when I've finally learned how to manage one task, they've moved on to more complicated things. Kids are hard."
"Then maybe you should have a couple more so that you'll have someone to apply all the things you've learned with Mason and Maddie," I joked.
The brunette rolled her eyes. "God, no! I love those two buggers more than I love myself and I'm glad I kept them but more children? Nope. Nuh-uh. Not happening. My uterus is officially closed for business. Not another child is coming out of it."
I then turned to Caty. "What about you? Still a no on having kids?"
She turned her head briefly at Benjamin's direction. The man was nursing a beer and was still engaged in conversation with Chadd and Scott. "I'm not sure what his stand on having kids are. But personally, I still don't want any. I think. I'm newly engaged, okay. I haven't even thought much about the wedding."
"What about you?" Brookes asked me. "You've always wanted kids, right?"
"Actually..." I paused and smiled. "Scott and I started with the adoption process."
The girls collectively gasped before they started congratulating me.
"Babe, I'm so happy for you!"
"We can have a playdate with Mason and Maddie!"
"Are you one hundred percent sure you want kids? Maybe you could get a dog first, you know."
I chucked. "A thousand percent sure, love. You know, it was actually Scott who brought it up. He said he wanted to start a family."
"God we're so old. We're talking weddings and marriage and kids and playdates!"
"Speaking of, do you want me to set you up with Kevin?" Brookes winked at Lia.
"He has a kid."
"Then you can be her stepmom."
We all looked at each other before bursting into laughter.
"Can you imagine Lia as a mom?" I asked in between laughing and trying to breathe.
"That kid will be traumatized."
"She's going to need therapy."
"Okay, bitches. How fucking dare you," Lia said.
We all paused and tried to hold the giggles in but we just couldn't help ourselves.
Finally I caught my breath. "Wait, wait. We should raise a toast." I held up my glass. "To us. To starting new chapters in our lives and yet staying the best of friends."
They all raised their glasses, clinked it with mine, and cheered. "To us!"
