"Not quite," Chuckled Steven from below me, as if he read my mind. "This chute doesn't just lead out of the building. In fact, what we just did was the easy part." He continued, whispering so quietly I almost couldn't hear him over the sound of sirens.
I blushed, nodding, and continued shimmying up the tunnel by pressing my back against one side, my legs against the other, my hands on either side, and pushing upwards. A wave of nausea washes over me and I pause for a moment to catch my breath. Despite having grown used to the stench, it was hard to ignore.
Finally, Henry disappears from above me and I see that he's pulled himself through a hole in the wall. We wait a few moments before he leans over again, giving us a nod. I follow him, with Steven behind me, and almost kiss the ground in thankfulness for getting out of the tube. I stretch, my back cracking, and breath in the cleaner air. It's nearly pitch black in the room, but I can make out the shape of Henry and a few brooms and closets. Steven pulls himself up after me, copying my stretch before nodding to the three of us. "Ready?"
Before we can finish nodding, the door of the room bursts open, revealing Ari. My eyes widen as I back up, Joseph casting the charging erasers a frightened look before getting into a fighting stance, which Steven and I copied, my hands shaking. And not just from anger and disappointment.
I put my attention on the charging erasers, flinching at the anger in their eyes. I duck past the one heading towards me, kicking him in the back. He fell, tripping over a mop and smacking his head on a wall. He lay still, unconscious.
I turn again, ignoring the dizzying feeling that wrapped around me as I did so. But before I can attack again, I feel something plow into my side, knocking the breath out of me as I fall.
Everything spins and I fight the need to throw up.
"Sage!" Yells Steven, and he sprints over, ready to tackle the eraser pinning me.
But that's when it happens. Ari leaps quicker then he did, knocking him out of the way. Steven gasps in surprise, landing on the ground with a crash.
He doesn't get back up.
"No!" I screech, kicking up with all the strength I had... Until I remember the handcuffs. Although Steven shot and separated them, he couldn't get them completely off my wrist, so small chains dangled off the handcuffs on my wrists. Using this, I swing my arm up, hitting the eraser in the head with the hard metal with as much force as I can muster.
Blood wells up in the wound I created and the eraser jerks backwards, giving me enough time to wiggle out from under him. I hit him again, and this time he passes out, slumped on the floor. I look around wearily, spotting Henry and Joseph pounding two other erasers, leaving only Ari, who towers over Steven.
"You coward! Trailer!" He growls. "You'll--"
"Stop!" I screech, leaping into the air and landing on Ari. Surprised, the eraser glared at me, punching me roughly in the face. I gasp in pain, but don't let go, kneeing him in the place where the sun doesn't shine. He winces, but is still able to grab my arms, twisting so that he's above me, his claws pricking into my skin. Blood wells up in the stinging wounds, and beads of dark red blood trail down my wrist and arm. I kick upwards in desperation, trying to get my knee between us. When that doesn't work, I twist so my back is to him, gasping for much needed air, and get into a child's pose. Once here, I lift myself up, get a hand free, and punch Ari in the face. He growls, trying to keep me down. We tussle for what feels like forever, until the weight is lifted. I look up to see Henry pulling Ari away from me, smacking Ari's nose with his forehead.
I gasp in relief, looking around. But I don't see any others. Henry, with his unbelievable strength, was able to knock Ari in the head hard enough for him to go unconscious. I sink to the ground, tired, and breath out a thank you to Henry, who only nods toward Steven.
"Oh, no," I murmur, bounding over to him. "Steven?" I ask quietly, shaking him.
But he doesn't move. Realization trickles into me and my eyes widen. "No!" I cry out, angry. Angry at Itex for ruining my life, and killing all those innocent kids, Steven included. For what? What were they getting out of this? I let out a mix between a sob and a yell, punching the ground in anger.
"Sage, is he okay? What happened?" Henry and Joseph are next to me within seconds, keeping me from punching the ground again.
"I want to go home." I whisper.
But seeing Steven's body, Henry and Joseph are too shocked to respond.
