Hanji blinked. Maybe I'm safe for now, until she smiled that mischievous smile.
"Oh really?~" she said in her creepy voice.
"Yes really" I said, trying to put an unreadable expression on my face, but I could tell I was failing miserably.
"Levi didn't give some kind of response?"
He didn't because Eren got the letter!
"Nope" That's not a lie. Maybe.
"Even just a glance or so?" She asked, her gaze only intensifying as she leaned to my side.
I scooted away "He never spared me a glance" I said monotonously as I looked ahead, avoiding Hanji's gaze and afraid of the risk giving away my cover. To be honest, I'm a bad liar.
Hanji was leaning across the couch's armrest, staring at me with that creepy smile.
"Look straight into my four-eyes and say it" Hanji chided. I silently took a deep breath and looked at Hanji, trying to stop my trembling.
"Levi did not respond to the letter" I managed to crack a smile to make it a little bit convincible.
She narrowed her eyes at me, as if she's looking for some fault in my excuse.
((A/N: The Fault in Our Excuses, wait wat))
She shrugged and drew back, standing up straight again and until now, I didn't realize I was holding my breath.
"Oh well, that's Levi for ya' always blunt about everything" Hanji sighed as she tapped her chin with her fingers, thinking.
"Maybe I should try getting some emotion from him besides being grumpy..." she muttered.
"Maybe you should try getting back to work" a deep voice barked through our silence and I froze.
"Oh, Levi! We were just talking about you-"
"Get back to work, shitty four-eyes before I make you take the graveyard shift" Levi gave a death glare to the brunette.
Hanji seemed to shudder at the 'graveyard shift' part but she obliged immediately.
"A-alrighty then, see ya [f/n]! And goodluck with Kira Kasuka, we need to get her within the week alright?" Hanji said before walking off with Levi.
"Y-yes..." I gulped. Just before they left, my eyes were on Levi, who spared me one long glance before heading back to the office with Hanji.
And one thought lingered in my head.
Did he hear our conversation?
I sat there in silence, thinking.
I grabbed my phone and sent a text to Eren.
"Well that was intense"
I jumped in surprise, almost dropping my phone. Sasha just popped out from behind the couch.
"Godamnit, Sasha, don't sneak up on me like that!"
"Sorry, I was about to show up but then I was so scared of Levi coming out of the shadows" She munched into something on her right hand.
Is that a potato?
I gulped and before I could think, I spoke "Do you think he heard? About the letter?"
"Huh?" Sasha blinked, going around the couch before taking a seat beside me. Yes it's a potato she held. Don't know where she got it though.
"Why are you concerned if he heard about the letter or not? I mean, he already knew because he got the letter"
I mentally slapped myself.
"W-well, don't you think it'll be embarrassing for him to hear about other people talking about it? And Hanji was there too..." I said, forcing myself to stay cool.
Sasha looked at me like I said her potatoes were ugly "What?" Then she grinned, the kind of creepy Hanji grin "Why are you suddenly worried about Levi's feelings? That guy has no feelings. Did something happen? Hm? You can tell good ol' Sasha if you ain't tellin' good ol' Hanji" she said, mocking a cowboy's accent at the last part.
Before I could protest, she laughed at my reaction.
"Just kidding, anyway" I was glad she didn't push through with the questions "I don't think Levi is that kind of person to eavesdrop, I mean, he gives no fucks at everything. He's all me, myself and I" she added
"I guess, that's what I think he is. Even if he heard about the letter, he wouldn't care eitherway" Sasha shrugged, finishing her potato. Which I don't know if it's boiled or raw.
I stared at Sasha, surprised at her sudden serious talk. For once, she was talking to me without her pointless remarks.
"W-what are you staring at? That potato was boiled okay" she said. My eyes watered like an anime's
"S-s-sasha, I never knew I'd see this day where you'd say something un-stupid. Thank you for reassuring me" I said, feeling joyed.
Now Sasha looked like I offended her potatoes. Her hands went to her cheeks "H-have I been saying stupid things until n-now?!" she panicked "M-my whole life is a lie!"
I laughed, "just kidding, you potato!" I said, giving her a noogie in which she laughed along.
Suddenly, I was glad to have a goofy friend like her in the office.
"What is going on?"
"HA!" Simultaneously, me and Sasha shrieked as Mikasa now popped up from behind us on the couch.
And there's Mikasa too.
