joji first caught my attention when i moved to perth, australia all the way from brooklyn, new york. i was very new, and with the newness came the nervousness.
i remember it like it was yesterday.
i stepped anxiously into the classroom, holding my books and such to my chest. i was a bit chubby but more in the thighs than anything else, though being thirteen it didn't quite dictate my life. a little fat didn't make me any more or less human, right? i honestly like my biggish thighs.
"you must be ms. l/n! come, come." my teacher spoke, she had a clear joy in her voice.
the door was at the front of the classroom along with the whiteboard, then the desks were separated into two rows. they were four big desks, two pushed together vertically at each side, with an aisle down the middle. the teacher's desk and things were in the back.
i walked down this aisle to the desk, growing more and more anxious by the second. all eyes were on me, everyone was excited to see the new girl.
"you've come from new york, correct?" she asked, i nodded. i looked to her desk in search of a name. a small post-it note read 'detention with miz clara:'. i scanned the list, the names read; max, ian, joji, chad.
"are you miz clara?" i asked, pointing to the post-it note.
"yes i am, and these four are the class clowns. as a matter of fact, there's an empty seat next to max. why don't you sit there? unless you're not comfortable sitting by him." i wondered what made her think i wouldn't be comfortable sitting next to him, and why she had whispered that part.
"max, raise your hand." miz clara spoke loudly. a boy with curly, brown hair struggled to lift his foot into the air. everyone laughed a little, then the boy put his foot back down and patted the chair next to him.
i walked over and placed my books on the table, taking a seat in the chair. "uh.. hi, i'm y/n." i told the boy.
"hey, i'm max. that dude over there with the glasses and noodle arms? that's ian. he's cool. and the one over at that table with black hair and asian eyes? that's joji. he's also cool. you should talk to them sometime." max whispered in my ears, pointing to the two. "oh, and, can't forget about chad. he's my cousin. he said he wants to get a bunch of dumb tattoos on his ass when he's older."
i nodded, looking at the three boys. ian was cutting up some paper, looking around every few seconds and adjusting his glasses. chad looked to be writing some things down, i saw him flip max off once while i observed him. the third boy especially caught my attention, the boy with raven black hair.
he was doing his work, with i'm not too sure what we were supposed to be doing because i didn't have the balls to ask max or anyone else. he was focused on nothing but his work, which i admired. everyone always wanted a bad boy; everyone but me. i always like boys who were respectful and good, but could have a little fun if they wanted to. i feel like that's how joji may be.
"you've got eyes for little george-y, don't you?" max whispered to me, probably noticing how i was staring. i was thankful it was a bit loud in the classroom, or else someone might've heard.
"george-y?" i questioned. he pointed straight to joji. "it's a nickname. we call him george sometimes since it sounds so much like his name." he explained.
"in that case, no. i don't have time for crushes. this is middle school." i said, zero percent serious.
"ohh, someone's got a crush." he said. i raised my eyebrows and put a finger over my mouth as a way to tell him to shut the fuck up.
"hey, i won't tell anyone. it's no big deal, joji is a good guy. although, he's a completely different person out of school. in school he just cares about getting his work done, out of it he's one of the chillest people you'll ever meet." max explained to me, and i smiled.
"may i hang out with you guys after school, then?" i asked. crap, crap, crap.
"absolutely." so i hung out with them after school that day, and it was amazing.
