Violet tapped her foot on the floor in quick uneven beats. She glanced at the clock, then dropped her gaze to the page before; only to resume her contemplation of the clock a second later. She froze when she heard the rumbling of an engine and the sound of tires on pebbles. She tossed aside her book as the car door opened. She hurried out of her room, skipping over the chocolate Labrador that lay comatose outside her door.

Her footsteps echoed around the quiet apartment. Her feet slapped against cool tile as she moved through the kitchen. Snatching up a pile of mail, she made her way towards the front door. Her heart beat erratically, her face flushing with color as she stepped into the small entryway.

Heavy footsteps resounded off wooden stairs outside. Violet shut her door, keeping her hand on the door knob. The main door to the apartments opened. Violet turned, her hands shaking slightly, her breath coming in quick bursts.

"Hey Vi," an attractive looking guy said.

He tossed his gym bag on the ground and took a seat on one of the stairs, a pile of letters clutched in his hand. Violet took in a deep breath, calming her pounding heart and smiled.

"Hi Alec," Violet said.

"Anything good?" Alec asked, nodding to the pile of letters in her hand.

He pushed back a tangle of black hair, revealing a broad forehead leading to strong prominent cheek bones, teasing brown eyes and a lopsided smile. Violet leaned against the wall, flipping through the stack.

"No, unless you find advertisements for Traditional Home to be interesting," Violet said.

"I have no design taste whatsoever. My room looks like a 10 year old met a 17 year old and they got into a fight."

Violet cocked her head.

"Is that suppose to make sense?"

He laughed the sound inviting as it raced through the entryway.

"I don't know. Mainly I still have posters I put up, when that was the cool thing to do, and textbooks that would make a 10 year old cry."

"Right. Well, my room looks no better, except probably neat," Violet said.

"I would say yes to that."

"What about you? Anything good?" Violet asked.

Alec took a minute to flip through the cluster of envelopes. Violet pulled on a piece of auburn hair, playing with it as she watched his face fall.

"Uh, no. Nothing good," Alec said.

"Don't worry it will come."

Alec meet her gaze, rubbing the back of his neck.

"How can you be sure? Shouldn't it have already come by now?"

"I'm sure it will come because first, you got the highest SAT scores in the school. Second, you're Valley high's star player. Third, you've lead the team to 3 championship and have had offers from all over the country. Duke would be stupid not to accept you."

Alec gave a nervous laugh.

"Yeah. Um...thanks."

Violet blushed, and stared down at her feet.

"So where were you today? Library or bleachers?" Alec asked.

Violet met his gaze.

"Science lab. Mr. Fitz let me work on an extra credit project," Violet said.

"Vi, you know you can sit with me at lunch, right?"

She nodded, her face flushing again.

"I know. It's just...you sit with other people...and..."
