The Last Fox Shifter

I woke just as dawn broke. Mikie was still asleep beside me. I smiled down at him as he snored softly. I opened then closed my eyes again just as quickly. The light was so bright that it hurt I opened them a fraction then everything was so bright almost white. I rubbed my eyes and tried again and again each time the light lessoned. I moaned annoyed at what was happening.

Ky? I felt mike roll over towards me.

Whats wrong?

Its too bright I rubbed my eyes again before trying to open them.

The sun is only just coming up? Mikie sounded confused and worried.

Maybe foxes have good eyesight as well as hearing. I moaned at his words. Whatever was going on was annoying and I wanted it to stop. Mikie rubbed my back like I did to him when he was in pain.

Do you want me to get you anything?

No its alright. Im sure it will pass. Mikie got breakfast ready which was dry biscuits which he place in my hand.

We will have to wait till I can see before we go into town. So lets make that list of things we need. Mikie pulled out the pen and paper from the bag and handed it to me. I started writing everything down. Every now and then I opened my eyes. The pain was dulling each time and I could make out the outlines of different things. By the time the time the sun was high in the sky I could see again.

Wow everything is so much clearer, sharper. I walked out the door and looked around the small clearing. I could focus on things in the distance and I noticed every move that a leaf made in the breeze. It was strange and astounding at once.

Maybe my body is adjusting to being part fox. I thought looking at everything around me. There was a movement in the bushes to me left I spun round and took off yelling at Mikie to stay put. As I got closer my body shifted as if it know what was going on. I let it happen I ran off in to the woods. I was fast jumping over fallen branches and climbing up others. I felt strong and powerful. Everything felt new and old at the same time. I could see and hear better and sharper than before. I stopped and lifted my nose. Different scents hit me all at once. Everything smelt amazing. When a small rabbit jumped onto the path in front of me. Then took off to my left. I turned and chased after it but it disappeared down a hole. I walked around looking for another rabbit.

If I could hunt it would help with our food problem I pondered. I moved slowly through the trees careful not to make too much noise. Staying low I managed to just keep my stomach of the ground as I moved towards the scent of another rabbit. I had failed another 3 times and ready to give up when I came across another scent.

I have never killed another animal before. Will I know what to do? I wondered getting closer to the smell

I peeked behind a tree and found 3 rabbits just in front of me facing away.

Here goes. I let instinct take over and I pounced grabbing the closest one in my teeth biting down hard on its neck. Blood seeped into my mouth causing me to gag slightly. The rabbit fought but it was no good, its life slowly leaving its body. I felt sad killing it but thanked it for giving its life so that Mikie wouldnt starve. We but down on its neck crushing its neck.

Storm was right it was over quickly and I was glad.

Well that answers the question of if I will know what to do. I stood with the rabbit in my mouth and turned to head home I was so caught up in the moment that I didnt hear the people behind me.

"Hey look. Now you dont see that every day." I jumped at the voice. Turning I looked up at 5 men standing just behind a fallen log. They were tall at least 6 foot if not taller. While I looked at each one carefully, I felt my fear rise up.

I should go. I turned to leave when one called out.

Hey dont go the voice was calm making me turn back to them. One jumped quickly over the log and moved towards me. Panic rose as images flooded my mind, my heart speed up and I yipped at them to stay back. He didnt stop and I growled around the rabbit in my mouth. He slowed hands up. Panic rose again with images flashing in my mind. I shook my head and took off away from the men as fast as I could.

"You scared her off dipshit" I heard one say as I ran away.

I ran taking the longest way back to the house. I didn't want them following me to Mikie.

I pushed myself to go as fast as I could go with a rabbit in our mouth. The wind blowing through my fur was calming and by the time I saw the building I had calmed considerably.

I walked towards the house and dropped the rabbit at the door before shifting. I opened the door and found Mikie gone.

"Mikie...Mikie I called out and ran around the house fear consuming me.

"Ky" I watched mikie coming out of the wood carrying a bucket of water. I ran to him picking him up in a tight hug. Water spilt all over us but I didn't care. All I wanted to do was hold him in my arms.

"You're squashing me" I let go and held him at arms length.

"Are you hurt? Did anything happen?" I looked him over nothing looked wrong.

"Everything is fine Ky! I went looking for you and found a small river" he held up the bucket of water for me to see.

Didnt I tell you to sat put? Dont scare me like that buddy. I patted his head and pulled him back into a hug.

"Where did you go ky" I told him about the rabbits and running in the woods but kept quiet about the men that saw me and about the panic attack I started to have.

Thats gross! he said pointing at the dead rabbit net to the door.

Well if you think thats gross try catching it. Anyway if I hunt we can start having meat again. I remember someone saying it tastes like chicken. I laughed at the look of discuss on his face at my words then picked it up and walked inside with it.
