Roses and Confessions

Ja'far didn't know what was wrong with him. All he knew was his heart was pounding and his brain was cluttered with thoughts he'd never had before. Dreams of sloppy kisses and cuddles and of starting a family.

The rose he held in his hand was as delicate as his feelings. He couldn't get (Y/N) out of his brain. She never seemed to see it, but she was so beautiful and kind and she seemed to think the world of him. He had come to love her so much he couldn't hide it.

Even if she was too good for him, even if he'd likely just be rejected, he had to let out these feelings. He had to do something.

Except when he made it to her room his heart stopped; Sinbad was in the room with her. He tried not to jump to conclusions, but she was blushing, and then she was taking his hands in her own.

"I uh...this seems so weird...but I really love you so much...not just in general but like in every way possible I guess? I want to spend my life with you....so yeah?"

Ja'far felt like he was going to cry. This wasn't fair, not when Sinbad already had stolen the hearts of every freaking woman in the kingdom. Sinbad wasn't even a good match for her!

Dropping the rose, he turned away and numbly made his way back to his office. He didn't resent either of them, and if (Y/N) was happier with Sinbad than damn it he'd be happy. Still, he couldn't get rid of the thought of holding her in his arms, of forehead kisses and poetry.

Why did he have to be a hopeless romantic? Why couldn't his heart be at peace?

Sighing, he hid his face in his hands a moment before he returned to work. Nothing had happened and he was ignoring everything.

...

"That was good...but maybe try it more dramatically? More confident too...Ja'far loves it when you're confident in yourself!"

(Y/N) pursed her lips as she listened to Sinbad's instructions. He'd offered to help her confess her feelings to Ja'far after he'd found her practicing in front of her mirror.

"Alright...uhh..." she took his hands again, looking up into her eyes and ignoring how awkward this all was. "Lord Ja'far, you've captured my heart and you've been so kind and charming I just..." stopping and shaking her head then, she let go of Sinbad's hands and stepped away. "This isn't going to work..."

Sinbad frowned. "Why not? You were doing great!"

(Y/N) shook her head. "No I mean...he's too good for me. If I tell him...then he'll have to reject me but then he'll feel bad about it...and then he'd be all awkward and we'd not be so good friends anymore...I can't do that to him."

Sinbad sighed. "(Y/N)....don't talk like that. He loves you...I can tell alright? Haven't you noticed the way he lights up when you're around? How he is always holding your hand? And he carried you all the way back to the palace when you hurt your knees during Maharajan! He totally adores you!"

"But he's always nice like that...he's a nice person..." she argued weekly.

Sinbad shook his head. "He's nice but he's not that nice to everyone else...he really loves you trust me...you just gotta be brave!"

She sighed. "Promise to let me cry on you if he rejects me?"

Sinbad paused. "I promise to let your cry...on Pisti."

Snorting then, (Y/N) rolled her eyes but grinned. "Alright I'll go do it...wish me luck."

When she left the room and found a rose on the floor, she frowned and gently picked it up. She could give this to Ja'far it would be perfect. Either way she knew this moment would affect the rest of her eternity.

...

When (Y/N) came into his office, short on breath and holding a rose, Ja'far nearly gasped. Had Sinbad actually picked up the rose and given it to her? Was his luck really that bad?

"Hey Ja'far, can we talk for a second?" She asked upon which he looked up casually.

"Oh (Y/N)...I didn't see you come in." He lied casually. "And yes we may talk, what is it you wish to discuss with me?"

She took a deep breath and averted her gaze, nervous now that she was actually doing this for real. "Well I um...I got this for you..." she said weakly and handed him the rose.

He blinked in confusion at this, though maybe she saw him drop it? Oh but that would mean she saw him seeing them and now felt awkward about it! Damn his luck was terrible that day.

Sensing his confusion, she grew anxious and started fidgeting. "I uh...well...How do I put this without you hating me..." she muttered.

Ja'far sighed softly, wishing to get this over with so he could put her at ease. "This is about Sinbad correct? I am very happy for you both...sorry about earlier the rose was just um....a gift since you like roses I suppose."

(Y/N)'s face contorted in confusion. "Wait...what about Sinbad? I'm confused..."

Ja'far blinked. "Oh...I saw the two of you together and I assumed you were involved so I left and dropped the rose I thought you were simply returning it...have I misunderstood something?"

(Y/N) was shocked a moment before she sulked to the nearest chair and rested her face in her hands. He thought she was crying a moment as her shoulders were shaking but she was quick to burst out laughing.

He had thought she and Sinbad were together? How had he ever come to that conclusion when she'd been so obviously in love with him?

Ja'far, not having realized the reality of the situation, frowned and averted his gaze. "You don't have to laugh at me...I might be a poor liar now but I really do wish for you both to be happy..."

"No stop!" She exclaimed, still laughing. "Don't be so sad, I'm just an idiot."

Rising then, she calmed down before coming and gently taking her hands into her own.

"What you saw earlier wasn't directed at Sinbad...he just saw me practicing a confession in my mirror and offered to help...No offense but I wouldn't be attracted to Sinbad if he were the only man alive...even if there weren't any women either..."

Ja'far snorted but then blinked up at her. "Wait...so what about the rose...were you not returning it to me?"

She shook her head. "No that's the funny part....You saw us practicing and got sad and dropped the rose and I found it on my way to come talk to you...."

Understanding then, he managed a laugh but then thought that through has his heart began to beat loudly. "Wait...so does that mean...?"

(Y/N) nodded and drew in a deep breath. "Ja'far, ever since we've met I've admired you and now I'm like...In love with you...and I didn't want to say anything in fear you'd be uncomfortable with me and you don't have to do anything about this if you don't want to but I just..." she averted her gaze then like she always did when she was trying not to cry. "I love you."

Heart calming, Ja'far stood and came around his desk, still holding her hands gently. He smiled then, and tried to think of what to say. "Oh (Y/N)...You're so kind and sweet to me and you're so lovely how could I not love you?!" His eyes sparkled then. "What I mean to say is, I really love you too..."

Her eyes widened and her breaths became a bit uneven as she listened. "You...you really mean it?"

He nodded. "Yes I do."

Tearing up a bit then, she hugged him and he took a deep breath to calm his nerves before planting a little kiss atop her head. For the first time that day, and for many more times afterwards, he was truly happy
