"(Y/N) please go summon Lord Ja'far in time for the strategy meeting, at Lord Drakon's request."
(Y/N) nodded at her senior staff member's instructions, preparing to make her way out to the training grounds. She had only worked at the palace for a few days —just as a maid, although even a job like that was very coveted since it was at the palace— so she didn't know much about the generals aside from the rumors one picks up on in the city.
She did however know that Lord Ja'far didn't spend much time in the training grounds. The reason for this exactly was unknown but there were some theories. The first and less informed opinion among newer staff and those who had not met the man, were that he lacked in fighting ability and was a general simply for his great wisdom and strategy. However, those who had spent more time around him, or had seen him in action before, speculated that he conducted his own training in the dead of night. Apparently, he fought like an assassin in the most graceful and swift movements possible.
All (Y/N) knew was that seeing him in the training grounds was likely something she wouldn't see again, so she was intrigued.
"Oh before you leave." The older woman stopped her from leaving and took her squarely by the shoulders. "This should go without saying however I will make sure and tell you: treat Lord Ja'far with the utmost respect, and do not make a fool out of yourself if you wish to keep your job, understood?"
"Yes ma'am." She nodded politely before turning and skipping away.
...
The training grounds were much like (Y/N) would have expected: mostly, they were just empty field, however there were racks for weapons and obstacles and things. Many soldiers spent hours upon hours here, though the place was currently uncrowded. There were few soldiers around, as it was later in the day and most were off handling other duties, so it made finding the freckled general much easier.
When she got to the clearing in question, (Y/N) peeked from around the corner and gasped. Before her some kind of a battle was taking place, however she could hardly make sense of it. Someone, or rather something, was in the air and a man kept jumping up and launching attacks at it. For a moment she considered running for help, after all this monstrous thing looked dangerous, and the man certainly seemed serious in destroying it, however she remembered that everything was yet unfamiliar to her. So she waited then, silently observing.
The fight ended in just a few minutes, and to her shock the monster landed and used some sort of magic to transform itself into a man. She stood there, too shocked for words for a brief moment, until she realized it was the king.
"Damn Ja'far, since when have you gotten that strong...you were really giving it your all back there weren't you?" Sinbad mused as he stretched a bit and rubbed at his arm.
Ja'far only grinned and wiped the sweat from his brow. "Actually it was quite the contrary...had I been going all out you would have more than a few scrapes. However, we both know if you went all out the entire palace could be damaged...so I thought it wise not to provoke you."
Watching a moment more, (Y/N) decided it was safe for her to approach now, so she made her way towards them, and though she did not mean to be she was approaching all too quietly.
Meanwhile, Sinbad was giving a hearty laugh at his friend's remark. "I guess you're right...still you were impressive...you pack quite a punch even without your blades."
"Yeah well that's what makes me so great!" Ja'far was entirely joking, however to accentuate his statement he threw his arm out and unfortunately just happened to land a punch square into (Y/N)'s face as she had been about to speak to him.
As she went falling to the ground, too shocked to cry out in pain, she only blinked and stared up at him in a daze. She'd never seen him herself before, but she had began to wonder why no one had warned her of his exceedingly good looks, as in her opinion he far out shined even the king himself.
His skin was pale, and scarred in some places, but it looked soft and his currently bare chest was well toned. His hair was white as snow and soft asvelvet, his eyes shone like emeralds, and the freckles dotted all about on his face and shoulders gave him such a friendly looking frame. Yes, one good look and she was already falling for him.
No sooner than she'd hit the ground, was he at her side, scooping her tenderly into his strong arms. "Oh goodness gracious, are you alright miss?"
"I..." she blinked a moment in surprise, not knowing if her breathlessness was because she had just been struck metaphorically or because she had been hit physically. "I..."
Shaking off some of her surprise, the one thought that came to her was the she wished him to hold her as long as possible.
"I'm alright I think...just my head hurts terribly...and I'm afraid my ankle might be twisted." She choked out, finding it still hard to speak to him, not to mention she was partially lying. Well, her head did hurt, but her ankle was fine, she didn't know what had possessed her to say such a thing.
"Oh gosh, I'm so sorry...I didn't see you coming, here come sit a moment." He scooped her up then, carrying her to the nearest observer's bench and sitting down next to her.
"Oh thank you." She breathed out, never looking away from those emerald irises.
He smiled a bit then, though he was looking her over carefully. "I don't think we've had the pleasure of meeting...you must be (Y/N)?"
(Y/N) blinked in surprise. "How do you know my name? I didn't do something wrong did I? Whatever it is I did, I'd like to apologize for it immediately!"
Ja'far snorted then, shaking his head and smiling good-naturedly. "Not at all, I simply take it upon myself to learn the names and appearances of all the staff...in part for security reasons and in part because I like to be familiar with those around me."
"But there are hundreds of staff! How do you keep up with everything?!" She gaped.
He only smiled then. "Ah, well I suppose I have a sturdy memory...speaking of which, do you remember why you came here?"
"Oh yes!" (Y/N) cried out, standing then. "I was to come here and summon you to Lord Drakon's strategy meeting...I hope it's not too late!"
"Ah yes the meeting." He stood then, not at all concerned at the sun set behind them, the same one that made him shine so gloriously. "Do not be concerned, I asked to be summoned early as I like to have time to spare with such things...on the other hand...how is your ankle doing?"
"My ankle?" She stared a bit in confusion, a split second before she remembered her lie and her face flushed. "Oh right! My ankle! It seems to be fine after all...what a relief!"
"Oh good, in that case I do have to go, sorry again for hitting you! I do hope you'll forgive me." He apologized, bowing respectfully.
"Oh of course sir!" She curtsied as formally as she dared. "I should be apologizing for getting in your way in any case...."
"Oh well...You're very much forgiven for that, it's my fault really."
Before (Y/N) could continue the endless cycle of apologies, king Sinbad spoke up from nearby where he had been watching amusedly. "As lovely as you both are together, we really should be leaving."
"Yes yes, quite right!" Ja'far agreed, nodding politely and bidding her adieu, before the both of them made their way from the field, leaving (Y/N) to watch them go, still blushing furiously.
"Well, she was rather beautiful don't you think?" Sinbad remarked, just loud enough for her to hear it, causing her to blush even harder, her heart spreading up slightly as she waited for Ja'far's response.
"Yes, she was rather lovely. Now about the meeting..."
As their voices trailed off, she sighed and made her own way back to the castle. She supposed she wouldn't be required to see him again for some time, but still she supposed a girl could dream.
