At Morning

The soft light of dawn filtered into the bedroom, casting a gentle glow over the sleeping forms of Manik and Nandini.

They lay tangled in each other’s arms, the duvet wrapped snugly around them. Manik held her tightly, his embrace protective even in sleep, his steady breathing a quiet rhythm in the stillness.

Nandini stirred first, her eyes fluttering open as she rubbed them cutely, a faint yawn escaping her lips. She turned her head, her gaze settling on Manik beside her. He was sleeping peacefully, his features relaxed, a stark contrast to the commanding intensity he exuded when awake.

A small smile crept onto her lips as she watched him, her heart softening at the sight. Hesitantly, she reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she ruffled his hair, the gesture tender and intimate. A quiet warmth spread through her, and her smile widened ever so slightly.

Carefully, she untangled herself from his strong grip, moving slowly so as not to wake him. Wrapping the duvet around her bare form, she stood, her movements cautious as her body still ached from the previous day.

The bedroom opened into a spacious gallery with a breathtaking view—a serene river winding through lush greenery, framed by distant mountains.

Nandini stepped out, the cool morning air brushing against her bare arms, sending a shiver down her spine. She clutched the duvet closer to her chest and sat down, settling comfortably as she gazed at the natural beauty before her, though her mind drifted far away.

“My life has changed so suddenly, turned upside down completely,” she thought, her eyes tracing the gentle flow of the river.

“Everything revolves around him now. I keep trying to stay away, to create distance, but destiny—and Yuvaraj himself—always pulls me back. I try to push him away, but somehow, I always end up colliding with him. Before Amms’ death, I felt like the luckiest person on earth. I had her—my only family, my everything. But after she left, I was alone again… until Yuvaraj came. He held me together, cared for me, loved me. But is it really right? An empire’s prince caring for a mere servant in his palace—loving her? Can that be okay? I’m just a girl who sweeps the floors, washes clothes… a nobody. My identity is nothing. To everyone, I’m just a servant, a ‘noukrani,’ a ‘Mahal ki Daasi.’ That’s all I’ve ever been known as. I did all those chores to survive, to fulfill Amms’ wishes.”

She paused, her thoughts growing heavier as the cool breeze rustled through the trees.

“But do I really have no identity? Am I truly just a servant? Then Yuvaraj came and called me a princess… Is that real? Or is it all a dream? Everything he says, everything he does—is it true? He says he loves me, but does love even exist? For him, I’m his love. But for me… what is love? I don’t even know.”

Nandini’s gaze remained fixed on the horizon, her heart a tangled mess of emotions as the beauty of the morning contrasted sharply with the turmoil within her, leaving her to question her place in a world that felt increasingly out of her control.
