The group set a normal routine, basically. The women would do the laundry, by washing the clothes in the quarry, and other chores. And the men did whatever men do. To be honest, I didn't really pay attention to the men because I was either studying, playing with Carl and Sophia, or helping the women with clothes or cook. I did know that the Dixon brothers would go hunting, but that was mostly Daryl.

I still haven't been able to shake the feeling about Daryl. I know him from somewhere. I asked Daddy about him and he said that he'd never seen Daryl before things went down. Seems I'm not the only one who's curious because Carl had said that the younger Dixon has been keeping on eye on me.

My thoughts were broken because of a staticy voice coming from the CB, "Broadcasting on the emergency channel. Will be approaching Atlanta on Highway 85. Anybody reads, please respond."

Everyone seemed to freeze in their places, but Amy quickly ran over to answer the mystery person.

"Hello! Hello!" she said, quickly. I stood up from my spot on the ground in anticipation.

"Can anybody hear my voice? Anybody out there? Anybody hears me, please respond." the voice continued, not hearing a word Amy had said.

"Hello, can you hear my voice? Hello? Hello?" she said, getting frustrated. Carl stood beside me now, seemingly interested in the situation.

"Can anybody hear my voice?" the voice continued, clearly not hearing anything from our end.

Amy still frantic to have the person to hear her said, "Yes, I can hear you. You're coming through. Over." Mrs. Grimes stood a few feet away from Carl and I. She had one arm crossed across her chest and the other played with her locket and the late Officer Grimes's wedding band.

"Anybody who reads, please respond. Broadcasting on the emergency channel. Will be approaching Atlanta on Highway 85. Anybody reads, please respond." the person continued.

"We're just outside the city. Damn it. Hello? Hello?", Amy turned to Dale, who was watching as well, "He couldn't hear me. I couldn't warn him." she said, disappointed. Dad began walking up with an ax in hand.

"Try to raise him again." Dale said, turning to my father, "Come on, son. You know best how to work this thing." Dad stuck the axe into a tree stump beside the CB and grabbed it out of Amy's hands.

"Hello, hello, is the person who calls still on the air? This is Officer Shane Walsh, broadcasting to a person unknown, please respond." dad waited a few seconds, but the air was silent. He turned to the group. "He's gone." he said, standing up straight.

"There's others. It's not just us." Amy said, stating the obvious. I smiled to myself, thinking about other survivors out there. We're not alone.

"Yeah. We knew there would be, right? That's why we left the CB on." dad answered. I stepped forward and decided to speak.

"A lot of good it's been doing." I said, letting the sarcasm drip from my lips. Dad glared at me with a stern look that said I'd be getting a lecture later. Mrs. Grimes saw and quickly stood in front in me.

"And I've been saying for a week, we ought to put signs up on 85 to warn people away from the city." she said, turning dad's attention to her.

"Folks got no idea what they're getting into." Amy agreed.

"We don't have enough time." Dad said, getting aggravated with everyone disagreeing with him. Mrs. Grimes crossed her arms and looked at dad with a stern look.

"I think we need to make time." she said. I could feel Carl staring at the back of my head as I walked to be beside Mrs. Grimes.

"Yeah, that.. That's a luxury we can't afford. We are surviving here. We are day to day. And who the hell would you propose to send?" Dad demanded.

"I'll go. Give me a vehicle." she corresponded. I stared at her shocked. If she was going I was, too.

"Nobody goes anywhere alone. You know that." dad said. I stepped in front of Mrs. Grimes.

"I'll go with her. She won't be alone." I said, crossing my arms.

"No!" Dad and Carl said in unison.

"End of discussion." Dad said, fuming. Mrs. Grimes walked away toward her tent.

I looked down and mumbled, "Yes, sir."

Carl started to follow his mom, but my dad stopped him. "Hey, hey, hey. Come on, take a seat, buddy." He said, before following Mrs. Grimes himself.

Carl sat down on the car seats that were tore out of a car. I sat beside him. He stared at the side of my head while I found hands very interesting.

He finally spoke up, "Why would you do that? You know it's dangerous for us to be out there." I looked up at him with a small frown.

"Why did I do what, Carl? Stand up for your mom? She has a point about the signs. There are others, who are alive. And have no idea what that city is like. We're just wanting to help people out." I explained. His expression soften when I told him my reasons for wanting to go out there. He looked down, before looking back at me.

"Your dad's probably going to tell you off later." He frowned. I smiled at his worried frown.

"I know, but I have your mom on my side. She's the boss." I giggled, throwing an arm around his neck, causing a laugh out of him. "Go check on your mom, blue eyes." I said, using his nickname.

"Whatever, highlights." He laughed, getting up and walking towards their tent.
