Practice Makes Paranoia

Maria dropped my hand to pull the door to the classroom open and the act had come to an end. She spent the rest of the week practically ignoring I existed, however, she made plans for extra practices for me on Friday nights, and I planned on using that alone time to grill her on why she was acting the way she was. I spent Thursday in a numb state and didn't accomplish anything. I'm also fairly certain I put my underwear on backward.

I had a new energy on Friday because I knew I had a plan brewing and I was going to cast it into action. I just needed to talk to Maria to resolve everything, and I was sure I would be alright. I was shoving junk around inside my locker trying to make space for more junk when I saw Maria walking down the hallway. She also seemed to have a new energy, but I was sure it wasn't for the same reason.

I abandoned my junk and moved to stand in Maria's path. She had stopped an arm's length away from me, my arms, not hers. Her short arms couldn't reach me even if she grabbed a ruler. Her eyes seemed lighter than usual and she looked genuinely happy. She had on an old leather jacket that was beginning to fade. It suited her in a way.

"What's got you in a good mood?" I asked lightheartedly.

"Tonight," Maria answered.

"What about it?" I asked, trying to sound casual and yet failing miserably.

"It's fight night," Maria replied.

"What the hell is fight night?" I inquired. I couldn't hide the disappointment from reaching my voice.

"I can explain in class. Let's go." Maria said while ushering me towards the room.

We entered and she sat next to me. Most students hadn't arrived yet, and the room was empty except for a few students here and there. Maria brought her desk closer to mine and leaned over to decrease the space between us. I watched her intently and waited for her to tell me, and she seemed to be deciding how she wanted to give me the information.

"So, some wolves will gather for this event that we throw every month or so, called fight night. At first, I started the event as a training final, but it became a popular way to release stress and get things off your chest. Wolves will sign up to compete and some people place bets on who gets knocked out first. There aren't any rules except no weapons." Maria explained.

"It sounds intense," I said while digesting the information I was just given.

"As my pack grew, so did the tradition. We've added some new things recently though, so we'll see how it goes." Maria said with a sense of pride in her tone.

"When does it start?" I asked.

"That's pack information," Maria said dejectedly.

"Did I never ask for you to forget about my little stunt?" I asked, giving a weak smile.

"No. You didn't." Maria replied.

"Can you forget I was a complete asshole and allow me back in the gang?" I asked sweetly.

My charms had no effect on Maria, who rolled her eyes and said, "If you can prove it won't happen again."

"Aye Aye Captain," I said with a salute, "Also, is the extra training still on for later?"

"Yeah. You better not waste my time." Maria responded.

I went about the rest of the day unaware that I was going to get my ass handed to me at training. I showed up at the gym to see the entire place was dark inside and it looked closed. I pushed on the door and it opened, so it was still open. I went inside and searched for a light switch when I heard something clatter to the floor. I was in the first ten minutes of a horror movie and I was the stupid blonde chick that went investigating.
