A/N: Short but sweet :) song is Woman, Amen by Dierks Bentley (I think that's how you spell his name ah)

John's pov~

Alex's fingers play with mine as we lay side by side. The concrete beneath us is cold and hard, but nothing I'm not used to. I rest my head on his shoulder, welcoming his softness and heat.

I lift my head to look at the sky, stars clouded by the glow of a city that never sleeps. Cars hum past, the lull of walkers in the background. It's relatively quiet though, here in our small piece of the alley. At least, as quiet as it can be for New York.

"One day," Alex sighs dreamily. "One day."

"Hm?"

"One day we'll have a nice house together. We'll get married, maybe even have kids. We'll live a perfect life together."

"I hope so, Lex."

"I know so," he murmurs. I watch as a plane flies through the sky, low to the ground, presumably having recently left the nearby airport. I feel the weight of Alex's head on top of mine. "I wish we were on that."

"Me too. Where do you think it's going?"

"Somewhere beautiful, a paradise far away from here. Where there are trees and sand and ocean and no worries," Alex muses. I close my eyes and try to envision the world he lays before me.

I laugh at myself a bit before speaking, at the cheesiness of my remark. "Anywhere with you is paradise."

"The feeling is mutual, cherie." The night is cold and I shiver unintentionally. I wish I hadn't, because Alex immediately pulls the ragged coat from his torso and wraps it around my shoulders, securing it with his arms.

I claw weakly at his hands, "Lex no, you'll get cold," I whine.

"You're my priority." I smile as he kisses my forehead sweetly. He pulls away from me and picks up his guitar, laying it across his chest. The chaos and ruckus of the city is lost to the chords that fall from his fingers, gentle and quiet and pulled directly from his heart. I smile when he slips into a familiar tune.

"I never say it near enough, thank God for this man, Amen," he sings gently. His voice is rough with tiredness, a calming intonation. I love his voice when he's sleepy, no matter how often he says it's terrible.

After a few more chords I jump in, "He gives me love, love without end, thank God for this man, Amen." Alex lets the final strum ring out, his calloused fingers hovering over the strings for a moment before falling against the wood.

"I dunno," he says thoughtfully, beginning to attach a few chords to each other at random. "Sometimes I worry things just won't ever work out for us. The odds have never been in our favor."

"That's a lie," I chastise him quickly. His playing stops for a second but is easily pulled back together. "The odds were in our favor the day we met."

I nuzzle my head into his neck, letting his shoulder length brown hair slip into my face.

"We're like a force of nature together. Things are just moving slow right now. We'll get there one day, yeah?"

"Yeah," Alex whispers with a fond chuckle.

I'm not sure how it happens or when, but I eventually fall out of the world of sweet guitar notes and comforting touches. Instead, I'm met with one much like the one Alex described to me before.

We'll get there one day, love, I promise.
