Chapter 29 – Promises or Threats
Half and hour later, when we sat on the giant ebony dining table of Mr. Stevenson with his wife sitting next to me, I still couldn’t find myself completely in the moment. My mind kept wandering to how me hiding what happened today, made me a part of something wrong too.
“Nate” Mrs. Stevenson called my attention back at the table, “ you have found yourself the prettiest wife ever” she looked at me with adoration in here eyes. I knew that Mr. Stevenson was the man who took care of Hamilton when he was young and alone, but I had never been the one to assume that the same was the case with Mrs. Stevenson.
“Yes Audrey” he replied stiffly. What is his problem?!
“Thank you Mrs. Stevenson, I think he needed someone to bring him down to earth” I said playfully trying to remove the awkwardness brought in by Hamilton’s response. My eyes flicked to Mr. Stevenson who was looking at Hamilton with an all-knowing sadness. There were so many secrets where Hamilton was involved I couldn’t even begin to assemble all of them.
I guess that was what formed this beautiful complicated man. I looked at Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson and saw real affection following between them. Could we ever be like that?
Only a fool would dream that way, anyone who knew Hamilton for over a second would know that he would never end up with a girl like me, or even imagine so. There was nothing similar between us. I was the worst possible match for him.
“Dear! Call me Audrey!” she said looking at me with an affectionate smile. Her whitening hair, did nothing to hamper her beauty, and her emerald eyes still shone like she was still a baby. She looked rich, but not exuberantly so, what was more obvious about her was her happiness. There was an aura of calmness, stillness and happiness around this couple.
“Audrey” I replied to her with a smile of my own. I had realized since the day I left for London I had become a lot bolder with people. There was a time, not long ago when there used to be only three people I talked to. Mom, papa and Brittany, but here I was today socializing between the most powerful people from around the world. When you have to survive, you just learn to survive.
“Did you know Rose, that Hamilton was a very stubborn child?” Mr. Stevenson brought the focus to him. He was sitting magnificently on the chair directly in front of the fireplace. I can imagine that! “Once he had convinced the entire board to shut down a hotel because a staff from the hotel had pissed him off”
What?!
What kind of non-sense was this guy? Normal kids were stubborn about wanting a toy, or playing on Xbox, not shutting down hotel and taking away peoples lively hood.
“Did you know he used to pee in the bed?” Audrey let out with a controlled laughter that wasn’t so controlled after all. I looked at her shocked and then burst out laughing. Both Audrey and me were holding on to our stomachs tight imagining what it was like to have the mega controlled to not have control over something like peeing!
