It was Thursday morning when Adelaine passed by Michael's house. She was 'exercising', trying to get a glimpse of the blond boy. Luckily, she spotted Constance leaving the house again, getting into a rented taxi. Adelaine hid her body on a tree trunk, making sure that the woman would not see her. She only came out of her hiding spot when the vehicle finally disappeared into the street.
Adelaine crossed the road carefully, knocking on the front door a little bit loudly. After the third knock, the door opened on its own, much to her surprise. The ginger hesitated for a minute, before she decided to get inside the house anyway.
"Michael?" She called out quietly, her voice echoing in the empty space of the house. It was too silent for her liking, her footsteps the only sound she could hear. "Michael?"
"Screw it," Adelaine said under her breath, climbing up the stairs soundlessly. She heard a quiet sniffle, followed by sobbing in the far corner of the second floor – Michael's room.
Without thinking, she pushed his room door open. The Langdon boy was in his bed, seemingly asleep, but tears were falling down his eyes. He was obviously having a nightmare.
Adelaine cautiously shook Michael, trying to wake him up. It took her three tries, before the blond opened his eyes, his arms automatically wrapping around her waist. The ginger's heart broke upon seeing how terrified and broken he looked, all from a nightmare.
"Adelaine?" Michael asked in a throaty whisper, more tears leaking out of his eyes. Adelaine caressed his smooth golden hair and his back, trying her best to comfort him.
"Yes, it's me," She told him soothingly, "Shhh, it's okay. I'm right here, Michael. You're safe. No one can hurt you now,"
They stayed in that position for a few minutes – Michael's head resting on Adelaine's shoulder, his arms around her waist. Adelaine rubbed his back and played with his curly hair. His warmth radiated towards her, surrounding her like a warm blanket.
Michael pulled away, his intense blue eyes looking into her brown ones. Adelaine wiped the tears staining his cheeks with her finger. With his blond hair messy and his eyes red from crying, the ginger thought that he looked angelic more than ever.
"You came back," Michael's voice was soft and quiet, as if he had a hard time believing that she was right in front of him. Adelaine nodded her head, gently caressing his cheeks.
"I told you, remember? We'll see each other again,"
The blond wrapped his arms around her waist, his head resting on her chest, "Please don't go away again. I had nightmares about you and it wasn't nice,"
Adelaine carefully caressed his messy blond hair, one of her arm wrapped around his waist. She hadn't realized that he was only in his boxers, but it was a good thing he was wearing a shirt. Her cheeks started to turn beet red at the thought, but her mind bothered her with what Michael told her, the boxer thing forgotten as she processed his words. He was having nightmares about her – it seemed like Adelaine wasn't the only one too attached.
"I'm right here," She told him firmly, "I'm not going anywhere."
Michael lifted his head, their faces now inches apart as his icy blue eyes looked into hers. The air around them started to get warmer, and the tension thickened. Adelaine felt like the energy surrounding them was too intense, and if the Langdon boy wasn't with her, she swore she will suffocate.
"I'm your friend, remember?" She added, trying to ease the tension that appeared between them, "Friends always got each other's back."
He stared at her like he was memorizing every inch, every flaw of her face – including the healing bruises and cuts on her face that was almost gone. Michael looked at her like it was the last time they were going to see each other, and for a second, Adelaine got scared. But when the blond's lips curled up slightly, her fears went away and her heartbeat slowed down to normal.
"Can I tell you something?" The ginger spoke after a few minutes of silence. Michael nodded his head in response, his hand clasping her smaller ones. "I have this strange ability. I can taste the emotions of people around me," The ginger cleared her throat, the Langdon boy now looking at her curiously, "They called it empathy. It's not like a light switch though, I can't control it. Whenever a person gets close to me, I taste their emotions automatically."
"C-can you taste my emotions right now?" Michael asked hesitantly, his blue eyes looking away.
"That's the thing, Michael," She tightened her hold on his hand, squeezing it slightly, "Out of all the people I've met, you're the only one person immune to my empathic ability. I can't taste your emotions,"
The blond sniffed, "Is that a bad thing?"
"No," Adelaine shook her head, her lips curling up into a warm smile, "It means you're special, Michael. And you're different. Being different is not a bad thing. It only means that you are unique, and you have something inside you that no one else has,"
Michael placed his hand other hand on top of their clasped ones, and the ginger swore she felt a jolt of electricity transfer from his palm to the back of her hand, "You're special too, Adelaine. I felt it since we met,"
Adelaine's curiosity peaked at what Michael had told her, because she brushed it off. Instead, she shrugged and patted his leg, "I guess special people stick together,"
The Langdon boy smiled again, but this time, there was something in his smile – a mischievous glint – that the ginger failed to notice.
