What is a red dwarf? Short answer: a dead sun
What is a white dwarf? Short answer: an even deader sun
These are both what our sun will eventually turn into billions of years later.
Think of it like this:
our sun is a nice young teenager with not a care in the world and can do its job easily. But eventually, it will become middle-aged and worry about the mortgage and oh gosh I don't get paid enough for this!
Then it will become an old person, ready to retire and tired of always having to carry all these annoying planets all the time! Now all you have to do is imagine the sun exploding between each stage... FUN!
Suns live for a long time, but they do shrink a bit and start using different nuclear fusion techniques to stay alive. It is thought that there are over billions of suns exploding and turning into grumpy middle-aged persons with their own issues with the mortgage each day. (Wow why am I so depressing?)
Anyway, back to the facts, it is thought that the last intelligent organisms would use white dwarfs as makeshift suns until they die or the dwarf dies.
