Chapter 6

Liz POV - The Outpost

Two weeks had passed since Lord Benton had come into Liz' cabin and discovered the body of his Captain at her feet. When the man entered, blood was everywhere : on the floor, Liz's dress and face... It seemed Benton didn't mind that the Captain was out of his way. That she had solved a problem for him. The man merely grinned when he saw the body before he looked up at Elizabeth.

"Go wash yourself, woman," he stated, "You reek off blood and sweat. You're not a wildling."

Liz had gritted her teeth, but Grace was quick to intervene. Guiding her out of the small cabin they both shared. Her friend helped her wash herself with the ice cold rain water in the back of the ship. Except from the sound of the water, it was silent and Liz washed the blood of her face and hands.

"I don't need an annulment now," Grace murmured absently while Elizabeth was pulling a new dress over her head.

Liz glanced over her shoulder to the red head who stared at her. Both women looked at each other before they both bursted out laughing.

"No, you don't," Liz said in between breaths, her hands on her stomach because it ached from laughing.

"Are you okay," Grace asked when they both calmed down.

Elizabeth thought about the question while rolling up the long, white stockings over her legs.

"I don't know," she replied truthfully. "I'm just tired."

Grace nodded and left the subject for what it was when they both made their way back to the cabin. Night had settled over the Sea and Liz felt relieved that Chesterfield's body had been disposed of.

"Sleep, Liz," Grace murmured in the dark. "I heard Lord Benton say we'll reach shore in the morning..."

Liz nodded while lying down on the heavy mattress. It wasn't the softest and it reeked like mould, but she didn't care. All she could think off was to sleep and her head hardly touched the pillow when sleep took over Liz. But her dreams were filled with horrors and blood.

And when Liz woke, Grace was already wide awake and sitting on the edge of the bed.

"You were screaming all night," Grace murmured and held up an empty bucket.

Liz frowned, saw that the light of the sun peeked through the small, round window of the cabin. She needed time to gather her thoughts, but as soon as she sat up straight, Liz remembered everything. Not because her mind wasn't hazy anymore, but because of the nausea that hit her again. Her fingers reaching for the bucket Grace was holding and her friend looked away while Liz emptied her stomach.

"We've reached shore," Grace said while standing up when Elizabeth was done.

"What time is it," Liz asked whilst she stood up and walked towards the chair where her coat was hanging. For a moment, Elizabeth wondered where her dagger was, but quickly realised that Benton and his soldiers must have taken it. She made a mental note to get it back, it was a gift.

"Nearly noon," Grace replied and Liz snapped her head into Grace's direction. The woman just nodded. "I just let you sleep...it sounded like you needed it although it didn't look peaceful."

"It wasn't," Liz muttered and opened the door towards the hallway.

Two soldiers were already waiting for them to escort them to the main deck. The never-ending nausea sometimes hits Liz while they walked, but thanks to Grace, who held onto her, Liz managed to reach the deck without vomiting.
